I think the thing is, as well, is that players want to be able to "earn" when they play, hence a "historical/realism" mode like WoT or War Thunder where it is also possibly to still earn in-game money and xp in those game modes.
It would definitely feel very BT-like and bring something fresh to the game. "Stock" mode, as in the previous games, is essentially the "realism" or "historical" mode of MW for 3025 or 3050, etc.
Right now trying to earn c-bills/xp when simply dropping into a Stock Mech in the current "customization mode" puts those players at a disadvantage, since relatively speaking, the default configurations were designed to be optimal vs. other Stocks. A 97.2 km/h Commando, for instance, is far more balanced in stock mode, than it is trying to use it against 150+ km/h heavily armored/custom Light 'Mechs. Having a simple optional public mode that is just there to launch into can bring in many,
many new players to try it out.
I haven't tried WoT's historical mode, but from what I understand your tank is automatically changed back to its default form as soon as you launch into a historical battle, but you can still earn in-game money/xp.
