Before I get into an explanation about what I mean by "variable tonnage to end CW Ghost Drops", let me explain how this would benefit PGI.

The idea would increase the number of CW equipped mechs that a player will need to have available. This will skew the players into needing fully operational assault mechs, and it will be the new defensive minded CW pilots who will be wanting all the new mechs.

The idea is based on how drops were done in the Mechwarrior Registry which worked for more than a decade.

Each side gets an tonnage amount. In CW, the tonnage standard is 240x12=2880 tons for each team. IS vs Clan gets an additional 120 tons or 3000 tons.

Add a checkbox to the "Preparing for Drop" screen on the defender side to opt-in to "defend ghost drop." When that checkbox is active, players accept that they will defend against a ghost drop even if they do not have a full 12 person team. If this happens, unused tonnage is allocated to their drop deck.

When the attacking team reaches the moment a ghost drop is initiated, the defenders who are opt-in proceed as normal to the mission screen, but an extra 2 minutes is added to the timer to give defenders time to upgrade their drop deck with the new tonnage limit.

The short player defenders gets the total tonnage (2880/3000) divided by the number of available players, rounded to 5 tons and set to a maximum of 400 tons.

12-man = 240/250 tons per per drop deck
11-man = 260/270 tons per drop deck
10-man = 285/300 tons per drop deck
09-man = 320/330 tons per drop deck
08-man = 360/375 tons per drop deck
07-man and below = 400 tons per drop deck

Now, each planet has more defense, the CW matches will be much more diverse and players will need more heavy and assault mechs. Everyone wins.

There could even be titles/badges/rewards for players who defend successfully while short handed. Image the challenge of defending a planet with a 06-man team. Gaming Joy!

...I hope everyone enjoys this suggestion...

As ghost drops can occur on defense, this could be revised to allow attackers to also defend counter-attacks.

The problem then becomes the fact that both teams could have less than 12 man teams.

This might be interesting, but it would be a dramatic change.
