Right now, it's just 12vs12 matches that do not affect territory disputes or planetary conquests. In other words, your chosen faction doesn't affect the game at all currently.

End of fall.
Fall ends precisely on the 21st of december.
July!
Soon.
It'll be out after open beta.
4 weeks after launch.
Phase #1 in september.
I am reminded of that scene from Asterix when they are haggling for information, and Obelix keeps hammering the guy into the ground.

There's 30 years of background material, but none of it's in the actual game.

since others just want to bash the game and not answer you, I will.
as far as I know, most players are that have declared a faction or a clan are not using any sort of maps outside the game to roleplay with. The reason most join one is simply because they identify with them from the lore.
when community warfare arrives, then it will matter what faction you belong to for certain game modes.

Basically yes. We were waiting for the game to support Community Warfare - Factions fighting for territory on the map that Rain posted above. Technically we were supposed to get it before the Clan invasion began, but so much for that.
Here, nearly everything you never wanted to know about Battletech can be found here:

Should at least give you the broad strokes of the backstory of the IP that MW:O is based on.
Also, if you want to know what really awesome faction warfare might look like, read about this:

They (PGI) have not commented on that yet. I've asked a couple times with no response.
My guess is that they are still weighing the adverse effects of allowing people to change sides whenever they want.

Back in MW4, there was an outside the game map and grand strategy based league named NBT. It was very popular and was run quite well. Some of those people invested in MWO because the devs had promised a similar in-game experience to that league. They have now decided not to wait on PGI and have begun redevelopment on a new NBT league. The expected launch date will be fall of this year. They are rewriting and updating much of the code, so that's the reason it's not being reopened immediately.
The chances are, based off of past history, that the community run NBT will start up long before PGI ever has a complete and working Community Warfare of their own, even though the stated launch dates for both are around the same time. PGI is, apparently, incompetent. The people who are involved in the new NBT league are not. So, if PGI doesn't release a working CW, fear not, there are some very experienced people outside of PGI who will provide what the community really wants.
Just so you know, I am not involved with the NBT project at all. I have not heard any updates about it for a month. I just have faith that it's being diligently worked on because these guys are not incompetent, which they have proven in past iterations of this very project.

Territory gains and loses on a map would ROCK! I guess then you need plants and way more map types.
Suggest a random map generator with basic layout so frozen city could random generate as many froze cities. (I bet this has bee suggested already) then our maps are more like planet types and space base types.

There are some very good map and map (design/implementation/randomization) suggestions in the Feature Suggestions sub-forum.
The map layouts don't really need to randomize, though that would be awesome. Simply expanding them in size slightly (smaller maps) and randomizing the locations of objectives and spawn points (keeping lances/teams together, but not always starting in the same spot) would go a long way towards making things more interesting.
