(in the office right now, so this post will be short... actually I shouldn't even be posting in the first place, but, yeah, you know...)
Some good answers already here.
I have only one little thing to add, which helped me a lot to equip my mechs (or to make a build, as many call it). If you go experimenting on smurfy's site (that page is truly a blessing), than take a look at this site, too:
http://www.mechspecs.com
There you'll find many builds based off smurfy's page, from different people for every chassis / variant of a mech. Look in the subforum for the Firestarters and you should find configurations for that FS9-s, most often with explanations why that build is made up as it is and how to use it in game etc.
So you get hints, inspirations, ideas HOW it could be possible to put in 2 ER LL, but what are the downsides for that. Or maybe other interessting possibilities. Just watch those smurfy-links carefully (look out for such things like double heatsinks, endo-steel structure etc.).

Chiming in to say Hi, second Bullet's post here, and....
Hey Bullet, you didn't go and make an alt-account did ya?
This intro seems familiar some.

Note to Hr Morriden (intriguing name to say the least) I do not think you are an alt account, but it was a good chance to rib Bullet there (and your introduction was rather similar to his)
Take some time to check out the guides section - especially this list.
Any questions you have - please ask.
Any answers we cannot answer, we can work on learning the answers for ourselves - and there are many questions that would not even occur to us.

Shar, why isn't there a proper shade of hot pink in the Mechlab?

Same reason there aren't decent metallics? It'd make hero mechs less unique?
<---would kill (his XO) to pick up TDK's gunmetal as a paint color.

This would be a valid point if anyone kept their Heavy Metal the original colours...
I'd gladly pay 2000MC each for a few decent pinks. Being able to paint my Protector baby pink and blue would be great!

If I could do the flame (hot rod or whatever) pattern on my pilot's outfit?
Or some other BLACK with pink highlights?
.....Would make an awesome contrast at least - reds are to dark for it, by very definition of being red as opposed to pink.

Depending on the specific band I could even live with that comparison.
Actually aiming for something a little different imagry wise though

Smoke - lightning - flames - a wide variety of patterns I would like to try it with.
Actually not really happy with really any of the "bright" colors in the game - Hot Rod Black gives me my good dark color, but the others do not contrast like I would like.

Real world paint drive me nuts (not in a fun way - stuff irritates the heck out of me)
Wound up dropping out of several art classes because the teachers kept insisting we use the blasted crap.
I do have fun painting my mechs though.
(probably because I don't have to hold the brush! )
