So my corp-mate AdultPuppetShow pointed out a funny fact. In Smurfy, you can now add all manner of actuators (and sensors) to your mechs. Hell, even shoulders. So this brings me to the question of weather people know if this is a smurfy bug or is it somehow related to MWO and it being a hidden function. Hand actuators being programmed into the game cannot be there without reason, mostly not for aesthetic purposes. I know that PGI has wanted to implement melee combat (hatchetman, axman) which would actually require such actuators. Now, my question again, is this a slip-up that gives us a glimpse into their hidden and pipelined features or am I digging way too deep into it?

I've also been speculating about this. We probably won't get a real answer until june 17th.

It might likely be a side effects of adjusting for OmniPods. Traditionally, arm actuators could be added or removed to fit the mission profile. Never heard of removing leg actuators since it'd make a mech simply a turret.

Yeah possibly but again, the question is that they actually coded in HAND actuators, they didn't just leave them as art appendages on arms, they coded them in. You usually don't code unimportant and non functional things.

They stated they would follow the OmniMech rules. The rules (I have TBC) state that lower arm and hand actuators must be removed if an ac, ppc, or laser is mounted in the arm. It also states that hand and lower arm actuators are pod mounted and can be added or removed following the above restriction.

I demand an entire extra set of upper, lower, and arm actuators for my mechs. Goro mech must live!!

Probably has to do with Omin-mechs. If you add a PPC or Autocannon to an arm it automatically removes the hand and lower arm actuator.

...maybe?

The hands are the most interesting to me. Are they just because, planning for future melee or do they offer greater flexibility now?

At the moment I see the hand and lower arm actuators as means of limiting different mech types to carry larger weapons on the arms, particularly the AC20s. If players are allowed to remove these actuators freely, you will see a many mechs carrying AC20s on the arms if they have ballistic hardpoints there.

^^ this.

Hand actuators are just a balancing mechanic for crit space in arms. We also have gyros that take up crit slots, but they're not programmed to do anything.

Additional hand actuators + mech can now give the bird = Profit!

The mechanics have these nets that they use to trawl for spare bodyparts.

Ballistics or PPC remove the lower arm, along with the hand. Lasers do not remove any of these and its up to you if you want to remove the lower/hand or not.
