I've always gotten tagged by long range fire on RCN that I couldn't see with thermal or night vision that I also didn't see on my HUD. I'd always assumed it was coming from ECM/ECM shielded mechs. However, last night night it was happening, and after the game I happened to notice none of the red team had any ECM mechs... so how am I getting hit without being able to see where it's coming from? Is there a video setting that pushes my view out farther? (Running now on medium settings, probably as far as my computer can handle). Do they have the sensor range module? So they can see my dorito, but I can't see theirs?

Basic user.cfg modifications slightly reduce the general haze in the game. If you also play in the dark and increase the gamma value, the city becomes just bright enough to play it without night or heat vision.

Normal vision can see much further than either night or thermal, and on parts of RCN you can see better with normal vision than with either of night or thermal. So they are probably hanging back just outside of sensor range(about 800m) but can still see you well enough to shoot you.

If they're like me, they carry both BAP and the Advanced Sensor Range module, so we can see you at 1200m or less (excluding ECM coverage). :)
Also, maybe it's just my monitor's position relative to my eyes, but I can generally see just fine in RCN without thermal/infrared. :D

Not saying someone did that but... the map-files are rather simple to modify, especially if one has cry sdk...

Night and Thermal vision only have a range of about 700m - if the enemy is outside of 700m you won't be able to see them in those vision modes. I find that if you limit your use of Thermal/Night to only those times when you absolutely need it your situational awareness can be improved.

pretty sure the game validates them at launch.

Its not necessary anyways, because you can see mechs across the map in RCN easily enough with normal vision and no user.cfg mods. If you can't, just turn up the gamma in your driver settings or simply turn up the monitors brightness.

But for many people, you don't have to do anything at all, just look. Particularly if you're starting in the lower city, because the mechs in the upper city are silloetted against the bright sky.

Alternatively, someone else is spotting you from an angle outside your field of view- and the other guy is snapping shots off at the red square at long ranges to zap you.

Graphics settings make a big difference on how far you can see as well. I know from playing on a laptop with low settings, I once spent a whole game snipping enemy mechs, and did no damage. I was hitting buildings that were not being rasterized on my settings, though the mechs behind them were.

I haven't modified anything, nor jacked up the gamma, and I can still most definitely see a mech outside 800m on river city night well enough to shoot you with a PPC or AC5 or whatever. No mods required (and you don't need a red dorito to shoot someone, either)

Now is a time to mention, that over a year ago in open beta, you could nail someone at their spawn point from up by the dropship. Our heat vision back then would allow for seeing mechs that far away. Even now visually you can pick out mechs that far away without well certain enhancements.

Thanks everyone!

I'll try turning up gamma/brightness when I drop there. I've always immediately turned on night vision.

What Wanderer said - it is most likely that you are being targeted by an enemy mech that you can see (or is within your detection range but is not in your field of view) and his lance mate is simply shooting under the red triangle.

If you're being hit with LRMs, the base turrets on some maps (that one in particular) don't need LOS to see you and shoot you. It's a good thing they are weak, because they are cheaty rascals.

The key word here in increase gamma (would avoid in-game slider since it seems null, try powerstrip)

Thank us later.
