Unlike unmounting weapons, engines, etc (leaving a mech empty), it seems you cannot leave a mech with a missing pod; so you must purchase a new pod to fill the slot.

Would be worth posting to the suggestion board, I think.

I checked the first few pages and it wasn't suggested. So now it is.

Right now you cannot leave a clan 'mech with one of its omnipods unequipped; due to the way the mechlab works, this means that it isn't possible to swap pods between variants without buying a place holder pod. To remove a pod you need to replace it with one from your inventory. But you can't move a pod to your inventory without a replacement. So all the pods are essentially locked to their original variants until you buy an extra pod to allow you to switch them around.

So in order to swap between variants we need to either be able to swap with another 'mech without selecting it (ie, the 'mech you're not working on with whatever pod you want would get the pod you're replacing), or have empty placeholder pods on 'mechs lacking a proper set of full pods (these 'mechs would not be considered battle-ready, like engineless IS 'mechs).

It should put a mech into the same "not able to launch" state that removing an engine does. If I already own pods A and B, I should be able to swap them freely across a pair of mechs without buying a third pod that I do not even intend to use, just to act as a placeholder during a swap. Very inefficient.

So what really would happen if you removed an omni pod and walked away?

*your mech looks at you with puppy eyes as you steal its arm*
Technicians come running, screaming "You can't do that! You'll hurt him! He always has to have both arms even if you don't pilot him!!"
You look at your techs quizzically. Apparently they think your mech is a living being, not parts of a war machine. Despite your better judgment, instead of reprimanding a lower caste, you requisition another arm to use as a "dummy" so you can move components around...

This is absurd... If you can leave an IS mech without an engine, you should be about to leave a clan mech without an omnipod.

I would settle for keeping previously purchased pods in the inventory. If you swap Omni pods then later want to swap back you have to buy the new pod each time. I would seriously settle for just being able to keep purchased Omni pods in my inventory.
