For starters i don't have a clue on how it all works, so i will try to bring you down to my level.
Is there groups of more than 4 playing on the public servers? Im going to have to say yes.
I have played enough to kown that the players that I played in that time were not random. And i
also see this get worse over time. Point being, if some one like me, that can hold his own in
battle is getting stomped on by these teams, than how are you going to keep new players intrested
in the game. I mean i expect that once in awhile but not back to back for hours.
Just a thought.

When the match maker rewrite is finished, you will only have 1 group per side. It shouldn't really be an issue at that point.

No - but sometimes you get multiple groups on one side
(never seen that happen though, without being pretty darn sure there was multiples on the other side)
There was a period where the matchmaker glitched and the 12 man que dropped into the public que, but that got fixed.

People still synch drop too.
Last nigth enemy team had 6 ghost bears, the one that actually anounced their affiliation was the only GB in his lance. There was a Gb on our side too, match start he did a 180 and walked out of bounds.
People say it doesnt happen but thats rediculous, i see it frequently enough, plus if you search the forums tyou will see faction events specifically using synch drop as the method of choice to run the event.
OP, you get stomped once in a while when you pug. If your team is getting rolled due to incompetence or unfair match-ups or synch dropping no-skills, fight it out, take your lump and DC out once you are defeated, pick a new mech and move on. Life is too short, PGI/IGP havent put MM or in game VOIP high enough on the priority list because it isnt a micro transaction, so it is what it is.

I know for a fact (and have even done it myself) that you can get more than 4 people of your guild on the same side through a technique called "sync dropping". Essentially you just get 2 groups of similar Elo and balanced weight and both launch at the same time. About 90% of the time you end up on opposite sides and it is a good game (much more even I might add than most drops).
