Unlike unmounting weapons, engines, etc (leaving a mech empty), it seems you cannot leave a mech with a missing pod; so you must purchase a new pod to fill the slot.
Would be worth posting to the suggestion board, I think.

I checked the first few pages and it wasn't suggested. So now it is.
Right now you cannot leave a clan 'mech with one of its omnipods unequipped; due to the way the mechlab works, this means that it isn't possible to swap pods between variants without buying a place holder pod. To remove a pod you need to replace it with one from your inventory. But you can't move a pod to your inventory without a replacement. So all the pods are essentially locked to their original variants until you buy an extra pod to allow you to switch them around.
So in order to swap between variants we need to either be able to swap with another 'mech without selecting it (ie, the 'mech you're not working on with whatever pod you want would get the pod you're replacing), or have empty placeholder pods on 'mechs lacking a proper set of full pods (these 'mechs would not be considered battle-ready, like engineless IS 'mechs).
