They have always been Experimental tech and have never been a cannon weapon system in the game outside of Xp tech.


Not true- they end up happening in more significant numbers only late in the timeline (Republic/Dark Ages), being non-mass production only prior to that. They are most definitely "canon", however- hitting prototype levels in the Jihad (3060-3070ish), starting limited production in 3078 and full production around the 3100's.
