bunch of friends have always been fans of the Mechwarrior/assault games.
we all kinda came to an agreement that we'd like to give the TT game a try, but dont really know anything about it.

There are several ways to start.
If you're completely on your own and there's nobody around to show you how to play
This is a good place to show you some of the basic stuff you'll need to play.
This is a link to some free PDFs to help you get started.
Here is a list of events so you can see if there's something nearby.

If you got the money, get the new boxed set. Its got a great set of minis, heavy duty maps and a stripped down easy to read version of the rules. Its a complete game all by its self.

Download the free PDF trila version first, and then when you are ready purchase the starter box set.
The starter box contains all you need to get started, the quick start rules, the full rule book, two maps, 24 basic Inner Sphere Mechs and two special Mech kits(Hellbringer and Summoner in the 25th, Timberwolf and Battlemaster in the current one).
From there you can buy the Lance packs to expand your force, or you can purchase units individually from other sites and Ebay.

The turns are long my friend, but there's a lot to think about in between, so its all good.
Make copies of the Tables have them handy. Have the best reader have the manual handy.
The cool thing is, if someone make a physics or combat based observation... there's probably a rule for that, that you can bring in or skip.
Example "Yeah, you missed and hit the forest. haha, probably set it on fire!" Yes... yes may have... see pg 2XX....
"So now the whole forest is on fire!"
"Says here it burns X hexes per round"
"The Smoke would probably inhibit LOS..."
"Well actually... yes... here it says..."

First of all, which table top version; BattleTech or MechWarrior: Dark Ages?
BattleTech was the original, while MW:DA was an off-shoot that WizKids made.
Asuming you want to try the original BattleTech game you can always sit down and give MegaMek a try. It is BattleTech converted over to play on the PC, and nicely shows the rolls and modifires added up (which works great for demonstrations), and it is free. They have also expanded over into Aero-Tech and BattleSpace rules (as well as the new stuff covered in the Total Warfare manual).
