This is the setup I use, and I really enjoy it. CPLT-K2
I can consistantly do 400-500 damage unless I get really unlucky, and been topping 600-800 recently. Just a fun very simple design. Only thing I really fear are Lights - just about everything else I can take headon and down them. Or that was true, until today's Clan patch in which I'm dying left and right /sigh But that's a whole other issue.

Perfect for a later set up... but the OP was talking about stock, no money set ups... (PS i posted a later XL-280 set up too) Soo perhaps someone will get something out of it....
FYI, do you have a no money stock set up in ya?

First you take a Mad Cat Prime and remove the missile launchers.
Swap the left torso for a TBR-S.
Equip your autocannons of choice on the side torsos.
Slap in ER PPCs on either arm.
Equip lots of heatsinks.
There you go, your Mad Catapult K2.
Oh you meant an Inner Sphere version.

Lots of good suggestions so far but TBH, until you have the c-bills for double heat-sinks the stock K2 load out with some minor armor re-distribution is actually one of your better bets.

alternately if you really want to snip consider something like this

Catapult's have big fat bodies with the cockpit right out in front, your armor distribution should reflect this. In other words, max armor on the chest and head, less elsewhere.
Of course one you start upgrading, the doors really open up. Personally I would prioritize Double Heat-sinks and a good XL engine, (the 280 and 300 provide the best balance of speed and weight imo). I am ambivilent about using endo-steel or FF on heavy mechs to be honest.
The XL engine will make you easier to kill but it gives you so much extra tonnage for weapons that it is well worth the price especially on a mech like the Catapult with plenty of hard-points spread all around the body.

The k2 is a great mech. You need those double heatsink tho.
One build I like is 1ppc in each arms, 2 large lasers and 2 mgs xl300 engine, lots of heatsinks. You play this in a support role, stay behind your buddies and soften the enemy up.
Another build I like is 4 medium lasers, 2 uac 5s with I think 275 or300 ammo with an xl300. When the brawl is happening just run around the outside of it and annihilate people.
Last one is almost the same as the first except instead of large lasers use 2 medium pulse lasers. Put more heatsinks.

My first piece of advice for any new player would be "Don't buy a Catapult as your first mech as the huge center torso soaks up all weapon fire within a mile and it is imo one of the hardest mechs to play well before you learn to torso twist...which you also cannot do whilst firing LRM's".
But you already did so i'll just say try playing them as stock until you can afford DHS, and then...still play as "almost stock" i.e. keep the original weapons. They are good mechs (apart from the MASSIVE ct...in case you missed that the first time ). You will also want to add more LRM ammo though (assuming you're using LRM's).

If you're saving up for DHS then don't buy anything until you get DHS.

I'm going for modules atm... and as you pass each point you can afford an entire new mech you want it's hard to resist temptation.
