This is a public service announcement:

If you see an individual, a lance, or a star moving to investigate the tunnel entrance, that is *not,* I repeat *NOT* an indication for all players of the team to follow suit and park in the depot.

The tunnel entrance is not designed as a 12 man Alamo, from old Terra, it is a death trap with three ways in, and no ways out.

This has happened 4 times, just today, and while I do not advocate Team killing, and will not do that- You would deserve it.

This has been a Public Service Announcement.
Thank you, and have a nice day!

3 ways? Where is the 3rd way in? I think it might be time to go back to Training grounds with a JJ equipped mech to find out.

There's the tunnel entrance itself, then there's the defile, and finally an enemy could wrap around the south end of the hill to come at you that way.

With JJs they can also just hop over the hill and use the hill to stage attacks on you.

Its fun sitting in ambush with a Dire Wolf though. Bring a kit fox with ECM to give you coverage so when you get a few guys that run in and suddenly scream:

****, DIRE WOLF BACK UP.

Its kind of hilarious.

Edit - Sorry, wrong tunnel.

Forest Colony tunnel entrance can be attacked from 3 sides on both ends, assuming one of the attack angles is "from above"

Bloody funny to jump park my brawler A1 on top of the small outcrop at the top left side of the southern entrance and wait for the unsuspecting fools to come out of the tunnel with their backs exposed. :P
Was even better back when SSRM2s didn't suck.

Tunnel
Entrance Next to Tunnel (from mid map)
Entrance from your base. (Flank)

-------------------------

And yes, the tunnel is a GREAT ambush spot, for a lance. I had an awesome game where my Star (of 4 players...) setup an ambush at the tunnel. I went in to check it out in my Timber Wolf and upon seeing another Timber Wolf and Battlemaster (with others behind them), coming through the tunnel, I feigned panic and retreated. They poured out of the tunnel 2-3 at a time where I was waiting on top of next to the radio tower, and my Star mates were waiting on the raised ground next to the entrance. They came out and faced the 3 on the raised ground, giving me their back.

It did not take long. 7 of their team died in that trap, and the remaining 5 were overwhelmed by our 8 other players- who did NOT try to cram into the depot area with us.

But yesterday, if I went to check the tunnel and found an enemy in there.. the whole team would pile into the depot where nobody could shoot, and nobody could move. The enemy came through the tunnel and the path next to it, and their faster mechs came into the entrance from our base.. I wanted to drop an arty strike on my own team.

A couple weeks ago I was in a match where both teams converged in the tunnel and neither backed off. It was so much fun, there were dead mechs everywhere in the tunnel, the greasy smoke billowing from their chassis obscuring vision, and still both teams pushed.

The worst is when the team on the lower side turtles around the entrance and the other team just walks in the water to the base for the easy cap win on assault. I see it all the time with the slower clans now.

tunnel huggers, pinch point squatters. not only do they block your way to escape or back up but they will continually shoot in the back, as if they really are thinking their hitting the enemy target, go figure!Posted Image

Can I just add my own general comment here to the PSA.

If you find yourself approaching a a gap that only two mechs can reasonably fight abreast in (there are many of these in MWO maps) and you know the enemy team is on the other side of that gap then don't stand there. If you are not flanking if possible you are a moron, if your whole team is standing there in giant useless death ball at a chokepoint you are all morons.

In a situation where a narrow point is between two teams the team that can bring more firepower will do better which means the team that has pilots who use their brains and a little team work to flank from multiple directions will tend to do better. Some one should hold the choke point but it doesn't take 12

Don't be a Moron, be a team player

That is all.

I feel this fits your theme and is applicable to the Not-alamo in the forest colony.

this goes for any choke point in the game. people like to plant themselves in them as an entire team and that usually results in a slaughter..

either push out of the choke point or don't go in the first place.

Half-true.

Yes, all occupying combatants of the Alamo succumbed. True.

However, the Alamo was made a fortress- and it cost the invaders 600 casualties, compared to the 189 fortress occupants.
The depot on River city is not a fortress, it is an indefensible deathtrap. 12 Dead for 1-3 casualties at most on the invading side.
