Considering the way Omnis have been implemented, where the CT of the variant is mainly used for XP tracking, the PRIME, A, B, etc. only really matters to the person dropping in the Mech (since you can recreate just about any loadout on any variant's CT). Anyone else only really cares about what overall chassis you are in (Timber Wolf, Summoner, etc.).
In my experience, things like TBR-S are cryptic and misleading looking at the scoreboard (what Mechs your teammates brought) and when targeting enemies (trying to figure out what Mech 'India' is based on a quick glance at the targeted-enemy readout).
With I.S. Mechs, RVN-3L vs RVN-4X conveys some information about the possible loadout. With Omni's that is not the case so I feel the A, B, PRIME, etc. is superfluous.
Based on that, when viewing the scoreboard or targeting an enemy, I would rather see the full chassis name of the Mech instead of an abbreviation (i.e. SUMMONER rather than SMR-A and KIT-FOX rather than KFX-D).

Makes some sense... Also, I'd rather see Inner Sphere reporting names of said mechs (MadCat, Thor, Uller). There should be a toggle in options allowing player to choose between seeing IS names and Clan names. Third option can also be implemented, showing IS names when player pilots IS mech and Clan names when player pilots Clan mech.

Clan mechs are never referred to by a three letter abbreviation in the TROs nor should they in this game.
Also the shape of a word is quicker method to indentify targets than carefully reading the HUD during battle.
Is my missile target choice a Spider or a Stormcrow? Is it a Trebuchet or a Timberwolf.
This problem is only going to get worse in the Future. Lots of Inner Sphere mechs carry a designation of -C for c3 field refits. What happens when the word shape is close to the C pod configuration of clan mechs? Look at the hero naming scheme. Single letters tacked on at the end of the name just like Clan variants.
Change it to a full spelled out name. There is plenty of room onscreen.

Getting the IS-designations for clanmechs while being in an IS-mech would be AWESOME.
Apart from that ...you kinda get used to the abreviated designations after a while.

That's another reason that we MUST be able to target friendlies...
i want to see their paper-doll.... their load-out... their everything...
are you listening PGI?...
I must know the status and load-out of the mech standing next to me in my lance when i am able to see this info on an enemy mech halfway across the map. (visual model of different weapons helps... but in a match you dont really have time to stare at everybody or ask them about their armor)
