I'm torn. I love the mobility I get out of a STD325 vs 300, as well as the three extra slots by having a 3rd internal heatsink, but find the weight of the engine really hampers my loadouts. I wind up with about the same weapon tons to play with as a Jagermech running a STD260.
Haven't paid out the ~5M Cbills to get a XL325 yet... is a XL in a Highlander going to really hamper my survivability? My HGN Loadouts tend to be SRM heavy- so I'll be in close range brawls a fair bit, although the extra free tonnage will let me load some ERLL instead of ML on top of the AC10 and SRMs.
What is the current thinking on XLs in Highlanders?

If I kill you in an XL Atlas or Stalker, I feel contempt. In an XL HGN, it's mostly pity.
But, yeah. Don't. Highlanders are in a meh place right now because they've lost a lot of agility. And that also means they just can't protect an XL well enough.

It's a gamble. If you can anticipate your opponents and defensively twist well, you might be able to make it work. But if you do it, don't even try anything smaller than the 325.

Don't frontline in an XL. On the other hand, if you're just going to lob long-range missiles and want some ground speed, a 325 XL can be your friend.

HGN's tend to get damaged in CT more than sides, so it's passable. It's not as bad as an XL Atlas or a Stalker, but more or less on par with XL Victors when it comes to survivability.

Friends don't let friends run XL Assault mechs.
I use my Highlander to Brawl first and formost, the whole point being I can lose my left arm, and side torso, and lose next to no firepower, with enough up-front firepower to deliver, twist, and take the return punch on an unimportant area, using a STD 300 and jump jets.
It makes me laugh when these high alpha build poptarts go after my side torso, and flee in fear after they've blown it off, and I bear down on them in a brawler...

The Highlander can make pretty effective use of an XL engine. It isn't for everyone, but you can make excellent use of them unlike an Atlas where and XL will quickly get you killed.

an xl is fine for a highlander. they tend to get cored more than side torsoed, especially in a brawler.

I run XL's in my Heavy Metal and 733C.
HM has near 2.0 W/L. 733C has near 2.0 KDR. /Pug stats.

You can run XL on HGN. Maybe your stats won't be EXCELLENT. But, it is possible to have 'ok' stats.
I run XL's in nearly all assaults, including Atlas and Stalkers.
With the exception of stalkers I rarely lose via side torso hits.

Gotta say, I don't see a problem with XLs on highlanders. My problem with them is that I ran out of slots, but didn't feel like dropping endo steel, so I just dropped a standard 315 which fit perfect for both of my builds.
