What do these shield-like symbols mean, some have three shields, one has a shield with a star, one has no shield symbol at all...but all are deployed? And do not tell me that they are somehow part of CW and the meanings will be revealed SOON™ or I will have to smash something.

The shield with star means that is a group leader, the 3 shields mean that they are members in a group. It is so you know your friends are grouped up in drops.

it'd be nice if they displayed that the way Wargaming displays platoons in game for World of Tanks, to let you know who's in a premade group.

Alpha is almost always a premade group.

But beyond that, seeing a premade group and knowing it would cause lots of players to disconnect in open beta. So PGI will never make a show of it.

Alpha on YOUR team is the first pre-made if there is one, followed by, well, you know..... The opposing team is arranged alphabetically until the match is over. THEN you see who was in which group.

I know this. But it's knowledge of your side that matters. ;) Knowledge of the other side is an exploit. :)

Thats a sign of how ****** matchmaking works, and how long its been a problem. Even with the annoying matchmaking in world of tanks i can count on one hand how many times i've seen someone disconnect when seeing a premade group.

also part of the problem is alot of the game needs fixed before they could show that information, not just matchmaking.

For example;
  • Mandatory Tutorials
  • Better C-bill payouts
  • Get rid of Ghost Heat
  • More than 1 & 1/2 game modes (assault devolves into skirmish with more camping)
  • Either a Multiple drop or Unlimited drop game mode with ticket based gameplay, think Conquest in battlefield. it would actually feel like a battle is going on.
  • Make an actual base, with objectives in assault, instead of some turrets scattered around an MFB.
  • Have a "Stock Only" gamemode to truly get down the feel of how it actually would have been in a real engagement in Battletech.
  • Get rid of this stupid rule of 3 bullshit, that ruins having a lance (4 mechs) for groups. maybe someone wants to run a lance of lights, mediums, heavies, or assaults, one of each, etc.
  • Have an easy explanation of anything a newbie could need to know that wasn't covered in the gameplay tutorial, not some half-assed youtube video.

Sorry, idk what caused me to go on like that.
