I have a few Alts... As you now know. The Elo of Bill Morghun (the alt from yesterday and today)... Stinks! The players are rude on comms, I was witness to IS team mates firing on Clan unit members. I thought this level of stupidity was for other games.

As Anton and Joe, the fighting is fierce, I die more often that I kill, but I get to do my job for the team win or lose.
Ahh I see was not sure if it was an alt or a friend

I know the hardest moments for me are when I've pushed at the appropriate time, die unsupported, and get to spectate people wildly flailing their arm cursors around with joysticks/steering wheels. I haven't had that happen in a long time so I would have to say for me that 'good' elo range is the best. People behave smartly in general and you really will only be frustrated if the whole team screws up or you push at a bad time.

Thanks ;) Brawling Victors are not fun like they used to be. Hopefully they fix the turning and twisting. Then you will probably see me in a Victor again.

Wow the whole ELO thing drives people insane. The level of insecurity is mind boggling.

Play to have fun. This is a game - it's for recreation. I'll bet if there was a way to see self-elo... maaaaany people would be in for a huge surprise (in both directions!).

For me I do not care about what Elo I am in as long as its the fun part of the Elo. Kinda why I made the thread

It wasn't directed to anyone in particular, just an observation <_<

Too bad an elo and prey gets too easy.
Too good an elo and nasty things shoot back more.

I like to casually play sometimes so I do enjoy it when targets are easy. Maybe I should ditch a few games to get there when I notice the reds are getting nastier?

Only PGI knows which side the curve skews towards though. Remember the standard bell curve is the hypothetical average of all bell curves.

What I would like to know is if the elo is a "lifetime" accumulated metric or a metric of your most recent performances. Coz the latter type of calculation would provide for quick upwards improvement.

Also, maybe I will ask Santa for a matchmaker that has metrics that groups people by their courtesy, gallantry, grace and maybe trollishness and supreme wit. Then I will give it to the community and PGI.

The answer for this one is basically the same answer as how much money you need to be happy. In both case, you get a very different answer depending on a subtle change in the question.

Ie, if you ask, which elo bracket would make most people happy, the likely answer is a little better than average. Similarly, if you ask about income, in the us it's about $75k.

OTOH, if you ask different people what elo makes you most happy, the guys who have a stable mid range elo would reply the same (a little above average), but the guys with the very high elos would probably say: the top elo bracket. In other words, they are there because either that's what makes them happy, or being in a lower elo bracket makes them really unhappy.

Similarly, if you survey a rich guy in the US, chances are he isn't going to be more happy with his lot than the guy making $75k per year, but if the rich guy was making 75k per year, chances are he'd be really unhappy.

Ps, no matter which elo bracket you are playing in, you'd be much happier if the people on your team are friendly and of good cheer. I've found those types at all elo brackets. The problem often comes when frustration builds because of a disparity in skills and tactics.

A nice high elo guy who is used to playing really aggressively is going to be really frustrated playing with teammates who are not. A fun loving guy who likes to play casually is going to be pissed off at people who can put 20 ptsx of damage into his ct from half a kilometer away the very second he pokes his head out from cover. They'd both be much happier in the elo bracket they are used to.

Interesting thing is all the people that wind up playing in the top level of play where its all meta builds etc and not liking it.

Yeah I wandered into "Excellent" territory today... Easily Identifiable as the entire opposing team appeared to be having fun on an enormous trampoline. Boing-bangfiz, boing-bangfiz, boing-bangfiz, ..., Boing-bangfiz, oh look its been almost 10 minutes, ... Boing-bangfiz, etc. It is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen.

I would agree with others that "Good" is where you want to be and where you want to stay. Even better have a requester popup when you are about to have your ELO take you to "Excellent" and have it say "Are you sure you want to go there?" and cap you at "Good" if you say no.

If you play the way you want to play, you'll find you end up where you need to be to continue enjoying it. If you are playing a style of play solely for the purpose of staying in the top level you get what is there regardless of whether the experience is particularly enjoyable.

Yes but they like going back to the lower levels even less.

You want fun?

Loose until you find matches with 3 out of this 4:
  • People with LB-X
  • People with Pulse Lasers
  • People who rock the enemy in their Pretty Baby
  • People who come in Quickdraws and Trebuchets
Don't forget to bring your own dakka/wubwub/shotgun build :P

PGI has plans to improve new player experience. Maybe in the future there will be more than the matchmaker to ease new players up the learning curve. To keep noobs in the game long enough for them to learn to be competent (and spend cash along the way) a well designed game experience will give the noob easy tasks first. As the noobs advance, motivated by a sense of achievement, the game progressively gives more challenging tasks.

Problem we have with current circumstances is that to get a sense of achievement, a player has to get kills and wins. In our all PVP environment, per match, half have to lose, and more than half have to get killed (cause games often play out like Skirmish). It is hard to reward noobs and veterans any sense of achievement without generating a dog-eat-dog vibe and general in-game culture.

A possible work around within the constraints? Ask yourself: where do other positive experiences come from? Give the game a more robust teamwork interface and experience. Some how this can give a player other rewarding experiences despite the dying and losing. Or improve the game's social network interface (which you can even fund with Comstar ads). Although, now that I've thought about it, an improved team interface might still get the trolls blaming each other.

Those are my thoughts, short of AI bots for PVE for noobs. But I suspect that the matchmaker must be the more cost effective plan given current circumstances from PGI's perspective.

I think they should prioritize a better new player experience if they want to grow and maintain the playerbase. Maybe there is a modular scalable solution that can go hand in hand with their current priorities.

Hmm, K2...two LBX, check! Arrow...pulse lasers, check! DDC...two LBX, check! Timberwolves...all three with pulse lasers and one with LBX20, check!

Eh looks like I've crept into the "elite" tier it seems as I'm seeing lots of gold mechs and a staggering no of Twolfs. Was having lots of fun in my Illya until this happened. Last game I had I did 8 dmg in canyon network. Bassically I barely make it out of spawn before I start seeing lots of timberderps and 3Ds bobbing up and down in the distance and BAM, BAM, BAM, about 30 secs later I'm dead and I can't do **** cause my Illya's got no JJs and ain't meta-certified.

I promptly closed the game and start to question myself why I play sometimes. Oh well, I'll leave it for a bit and hopefully next time I'm not thrown in with the meta-humpers which I really despise.
