So...

I'm guessing sticking to the classic battletech storyline, insofar as known recognized merc companies, is out the window?

Not sure what you mean by this? Do you mean that since many players will be crating Merc groups that there will not be cannon merc units? If so, that really has not been decided, and I actually asked that question in the Thread opened up by Bryian. i think w have to sit and wait for that answer....that is if I understood your question correctly

If you read the new Dev Interview they kinda clarify this question. They said they might reserve some of the more famous units names.

Actually I was thinking about all the 12 year olds that don't know Battletech from bubblegum who start up merc companies and the first thing they do is call it a clan, which is wrong, and then append that with some juvenile name that never existed in the classic battletech storyline. For instance, Clan Fuzzy Dice or Clan Asskicker or somesuch. You get the idea. Now I realize that that probably sounds eliteist but frankly that sort of thing just makes my skin crawl.

Welcome to the internet? MP Mechwarrior has often had some interesting unit names. Not too sure how much this board is populated with kids though.

This was the thread I meant to post this in.
Most of the players are 20+ a few are younger but i think MWO will be many more adults then most games... as MechWarrior is what we grew up with

Oh there's no doubt that this sort of thing will happen. I think for the most part though, MWO players have enough experience with the game and/or background lore that this won't be as bad as in other games.

This may come across as "elitist" or whatever, but my solution to this will be to ignore them in the game. Not to work with them, not to ally with them. But I'm in more the hardcore/RP crowd. If a lot of the established units do this, things will even themselves out through peer pressure.

The Devs indicated that you as a player will NOT be able to use the names of established factions/organizations within Battletech lore.

So you won't be able to form the Wolf's Dragoons or the Kellhounds as a merc company, as those are established names.

IMO, this is an excellent decision. I would hate to see people ruining the lore behind these units, although I have no doubt people will create wannabe Wolf's Dragoon units.

<this was in response to Dihm and the previous messages>

Yeah I hope so. I was thinking back to the final days of the Grand Council Mechwarrior 2 League. The internet was becoming more widely available and we were starting to see an exponentially increasing influx of pimply faced little pukes whose sole purpose seemed to be making everyone else miserable. That more than anything else was the nail in the coffin for the league. Many of the old timers who began playing Netmech over modem just got fed up and retired from the game we loved so much.

To those of you who are as big of a dork as I am, I'm in process of writing up fluff for an in-game roleplaying Merc Unit I'm planning on making, (depending on how social interaction in this game actually allows for roleplaying). Would anybody be interested in RPing in a down and out mercenary unit somewhat like Wilson's Hussars (but not named Wilson's Hussars as the name filter won't allow it)?

Actually there are alot of times where the novels mention that there are alot of units company size and smaller out there for hire so it is completly within the BT storyline.

I know there are a lot of wacky unit names popping up and some people may or may not find it frustrating to branch out beyond the 'canon' or get terms wrong. But I'd like to point out that even FASA pocked fun at the Battletech franchise, have a look at http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Critter-TEK

I think it's going to start with smaller lance and company sized units taking on contracts and working thier way into the big leagues. You may find there's a mercenary review and bonding commission set up to handle contracts and give units ratings that will dictate what sort of jobs you get and how reputable your employers are as well.

The larger merc units often subcontracted smaller jobs out to units they were using as feeder teams, allowing small units to scoop up contracts and make more of themselves then rolling those units into thier TO&E. Certainly the Dragoons did it after the Dragoon Civil War and the Kell Hounds were in the process of doing it with a unit right before the Genyosha caught that battalion and smashed it flat.

Give the game and universe time to expland, you can pilot a mech for the big leagues once you have played in the little league for a while.

I do have to say that, a couple years after this thread has been posted, that I find even with pimply-faced twitch-maniacs on the field of battle, that most of the games I've been dropping into seem to have a great deal of tactical umph to them. You don't just have a bunch of little kids running around bugging the crap out of everyone; instead, though some of the games seem chaotic, that chaos is, for the most part, controllable. Now, if they would slow down Lights being able to turn remarkably fast, at speed, without falling over, and if they would make ECM do what it's supposed to do -penalty, not invisibility- and tone down the new Radar Deprivation module, the game could feel more like home, and less like not-LosTech-Warrior.

As interesting as this thread may be, why is it in the Merc forums and not the general discussion forums? This is where we do all our recruiting and advertising...

In the earlier days of this forum, a LOT of threads just seeing if someone's friends were around got shoved into these merc recruitment forums. I'm not certain they'll be moved anytime soon, either.
