I'm very new to this game and I'm looking at buying my first mech,as none of the trial mechs appeal to me at all, although some of them gave me some ideas about what weapons I like and don't like. I've been experimenting with various builds in the machlab, here http://mwo.smurfy-ne...echlab#modified and the stalker 5m appeals to me as it has good missile and energy weapons slots, but is it a good idea to jump straight into a assault mech from the start? As I'm finding it hard to locate another mech that I like..

Secondly the build I did plan was based around a lot of SRM's and some PPC's as in one of my matches I had a good time with giving a light a SRM volley at point-blank range, and the sheer amount of damage amazed me,and being able to fire what looks like lighting, well that's something that seems rather awesome to me..

I always advise new players to avoid light and assault mechs. They require a lot more specialized skill (especially lights). Assaults cannot move out of the way fast enough and lights are too fragile. Mediums and Heavies have way more balanced capabilities that make them more forgiving during the learning stage. You can do SRM and PPC-heavy builds on any weight class.

my first assault mech that i played was a stalker.. (the first i bought was an atlas, but i parked it after 3 miserable matches doing about 100 damage total..) i was new then so we won't talk about that..

BUT, you said PPC's and missiles, and that my friend is what a stalker is all about IMO. It also has the misery which is an amazing hero mech. The 3F is rocking, and it has an LRM 40 version that is like a fat catapult which IMO is a good thing. There is also the 4N, which is perfect for boating energy, and the 5M.. which is an SRM master.

all in all, id say give the stalkers a try.. I really enjoy them, and can't wait to get a chance to take um out for a spin since quirks.. but i have been having way to much fun in other mechs that got quirked.. Still, i look forward to it :)

Don't even think about buying a chassis that doesn't come stock with double heat sinks without having enough c-bills to add the double heat sinks after you buy it. This upgrade is pretty much required on absolutely every single mech you will ever own, and if you run without it you will regret it. On that note, most of the trial mechs don't have them so you will suddenly discover you can shoot a lot ore often once you play with a custom mech.

I have most of my best games running Locusts. The best mech to train for playing lights while you are learning, though, is the Cicada, since it has slightly more armor.
