[edit: I've noticed this many more times and it doesn't seem to be related to 3pv)

I think I've inadvertently fired on friendly mechs before due to the "friendly" designation not appearing on the HUD, but I was able to document this a little better in this specific incident. I did a search on this and it seems like this has been an ongoing thing for a long time, which may be related to a line of sight issue. I didn't see any posts suggesting that it has to do with third person view, but that might be something to look out for.

In this image near the beginning of the game, you see a third-person-Nova with no friendly or enemy marking. You'll notice he has no triangle in the field nor on the map. I didn't shoot him because I knew there was no way an enemy Nova could be there that quickly (in the past I think I accidentally shot at a friendly Commando with no markings near the beginning of a match, thinking he was under ECM).

Spoiler

So decided to use the teammate status button (default "q"). I've read some posts that it may resolves the issue. But it did not in this case. As you can see, it works for the rest of the team, but our Nova friend still doesn't register.

Spoiler

This is a few seconds later. He still does not have any designation on the radar or field.

Spoiler

However, just a few seconds later, everything seems alright. Both on the radar and in plain sight with the teammate status button. I notice that he no longer has the third person view probe.

Spoiler

Obviously, one can see that this can be a problem. Someone mistakenly fires on a friendly that doesn't have any visual designation. The guy who got fired on then calls for his lancemates to retaliate, and then you have two or more dead mechs on your team (of course it's happened to me). I'm not sure if this is related to 3pv, but if a similar incident happens, look out for it and report your findings/file a ticket.

Welp, it's probably not a 3pv issue. I had it happen again, clearly this guy wasn't in 3pv. Screenshots from 6/24/14, 1:04 am PDT

At least someone is finally getting some screenshots for this, nice job dude. Hopefully the Devs are grinding their gears to get this fixed.

i've been seeing this a bunch as well. sometimes it clears up on its own, sometimes not, no real pattern to it. frequently affects more than one friendly mech at a time

This needs to be solved ASAP as this is behavior is getting worse over time.

I'll have to dig up a few screenshots but it starts to cause lots of unwanted FF from myself or other people that rely on such indicators.

Happened again a couple days ago (6-29-14, 5:06 PM PDT). Apparently, I got hit with the bug too because shortly after taking these screenshots, a teammate started firing on me and would not stop until I told him to through chat.

Spoiler

I think the only thing you can really do about this is to use some common sense. This bug sometimes seems to happen at the beginning of the game. There's no way most enemy mechs can get to your spawn point that fast. If you see a moving mech nearby that has no indicator and can't be targetted, watch for a "low signal" warning. If you're not being ECM'd and still can't see the info on your HUD, chances are it's a friendly with the bug) and you should refrain from shooting.

Unfortunately, many players will just go ahead and shoot at anything that isn't indicated as a friendly, and you can see how this can cause a team to go to crap within the opening seconds of the game.

In one match, I apparently didn't have a IFF designation. After standing still next to a friendly Warhawk (lance mate I was grouped with) and right at the start of the game, I ended up having someone shoot me three times, thinking I was an enemy. Appearently, he didn't know about the bug (forgivable).

However, I have a tip for people... If a mech isn't shooting at you (or your teammates), it's the start of the match, and you have several teammates looking at the mech and not shooting at it... I'd suggest you don't start to shoot at it. (Also, if you are close to the mech, it's no ECM unless you get a "Low Signal" bar, and even then you should be able to target them at that point.)

This was a case where I ended up having to defend myself, made the person run away and he quickly apologize after I told him "Yeah. You better run!" I mean him no disrespect as I tell this tale (if he is reading this) as it was an easy mistake. However, I would think some common sense problem solving could have solved the problem without a single shot being fired. (I mean, we had JUST loaded and hadn't even managed to move very far yet. No way an enemy mech could have been there yet, even if it was faster than a Locust!)

Normally, this bug will clear out before combat starts, so it normally is not much of an issue. However, I would like it being searched and fixed at some point. (FF is not very friendly... It still hurts!)

I've noticed this happening these days at a far greater occurence than before.

Nothing like starting the game with a -6% in armor. C'mon folks, have common sense! If you PUG a lot like me and find yourself in Charlie lance, it may be beneficial for you to stick to the rear of the lance. Just sayin..

Nice description Takashi.

I also see this in nearly every game I play, but this has nothing to do with the last patch. Its an old problem, that need to be fixed. Its very annoying when you cant rely on your Minimap and you have to stop your mech and turn around to see if there are teammates behind you, or not.

Hopefully we will see a fix within the next months.

I have also been experiencing this issue for a while now. I notice it very frequently; not sure if it's every game. Certain friendly mechs have no friendly designation on my HUD and nothing is drawn on the minimap.

Similarly (and this might not be the same issue, and it may have already been fixed) I used to notice that certain friendly mechs would disappear from my radar/minimap/HUD whenever I lost line-of-sight to them.

I've noticed this as well. It doesn't happen very often but when I see a mech with no marker I assume it is an enemy under ECM. I've not killed a friendly due to this bug yet but I have shot them.

Yea PGI has responded to my ticket and stated that it is a known issue. I'm just seeing it happen extremely often in the past couple weeks. Nothing we can really do except be careful. And if you can get a video or picture you might as well mark the time down and file a ticket so they might be able to investigate it easier. But yea, it sucks.

Also, I may have to stop trying to get away with paper thin back armor lol
