lately I've begun wondering how to get my ping down in MWO so i did a little research and found out the best way is to be closer to a server moving house is a bit drastic so i found out how to set up my own server using a spare desk top pc but it seems that this would only serve my own personal website and i want it to provide low ping to my local area for playing MWO.

you might have guessed by now i'm a complete novice at this stuff so any advice might have to be translated to none computy language but lets say for arguments sake i have all the necessary kit and it is plugged in and ready to serve MWO 24/7 for any one who might need it,

is what i'm dreaming of possible or is it only a dream ???

I'll bite.

While what you are describing is possible in many multi-player games, currently (and for the foreseeable future) the only servers you can play on are the official ones.

PGI does not allow matches to be launched on personal servers.

Sorry. I'll assume this is not a troll and offer a real answer.

The server is the machine that provides the game. In this case the MWO servers are hosted in the Toronto area. If you want to play MWO you have to connect the client running on your PC to the server hosting the game.

Having your own server does nothing since you do not have the game server software available. You can run your own web server, mail server, and even a variety of different games (e,g, Minecraft for example) but you can't do anything to reduce the ping between your network location and the PGI servers without changing your network location or upgrading your internet connection (even an upgraded connection might have little effect on ping if most of the lag is due to the connection from your ISP to the PGI MWO servers).

Don't fret man. I live in Hong Kong and I get a 100 mb fibre optic connection. But I still have about 301 ping when I play.

Sadly, fast internet access doesn't help dealing with the physics of moving a signal across the world and back again. Doing that in 200ms is actually a truly impressive feat when all is said and done.
