Clan Invasion

The Clan Invasion (known to the Clans as Operation Revival) refers to the massive Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere, commencing with the arrival of Clans Jade Falcon, Wolf, Ghost Bear, and Smoke Jaguar in the near, coreward Periphery (The Rift and The Draconian Drift) in August, 3049. The Clan Invasion would continue for two and one-half years, and increase in scope to include three more Invading Clans, but would end with the the Battle of Tukayyid in June, 3052.

Overview

Following the death of ilKhan Leo Showers over Radstadt in 3050, "reserve" Clans Steel Viper and Nova Cat were added ostensibly to "aid" the efforts of Clans Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar, while a seventh Clan, Clan Diamond Shark, did not mobilize in time to "aid" Clan Ghost Bear. However, the additions of these reserve Clans were actually meant to hinder the progress by Clan Wolf's rivals, a machination by newly-elected ilKhan Ulric Kerensky of Clan Wolf. In fact, Clans Steel Viper and Nova Cat were intentionally assigned to invasion corridors already assigned to bitter rivals.
Operation Revival was intended to be the great return of General Kerensky's heirs. Ostensibly, the Clans intended to free the people of the Inner Sphere from the greed and corruption of the constantly warring Successor States, and re-create the great Star League. As such, the Clan Invaders focused their attention and their campaigns almost exclusively on units pledged to the Lords of the Great Houses. Only on rare occasions were neutral forces engaged, specifically the Com Guard garrisons. Though ComStar facilities were present on many of the planets conquered during Operation Revival, the Com Guards were ordered to remain neutral - the new Clan Invaders would simply be a different lord to whom ComStar could provide communication services. In an unlikely twist, these neutral Com Guards became the military which stopped the Clan Invasion.

In another machination by ilKhan Ulric, the Clans "revealed" the ultimate goal of the Clan Invasion to Comstar in 3051 - Terra, Comstar's home. The rationale behind the Terran conquest was simple - the Clan capable of successfully conquering mankind's home world would become the ilClan, the Clan which would guide/control the creation of the new Star League. ilKhan Ulric (a Warden) gambled that ComStar would not stand idly while Terra was conquered. While the less sophisticated armies of the Successor Lords could not stop the Clans for some time, Ulric hoped either the more sophisticated Com Guards would halt the Clan invasion (or ensure Clan Wolf would become the ilClan). In either eventuality, Ulric's Warden stance would become ascendant.

ilKhan Ulric Kerensky's gamble worked. His "revelation" prompted Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht to muster the Com Guard in defense of a proxy world - the Com Guards would defend a pair of objectives against each Clan on Tukayyid, a small "backwater" world in the Free Rasalhague Republic. Should the Com Guard fail, ComStar offered to surrender Terra rather than fight. After a month of combat, ComStar emerged victorious, and the ensuing Truce of Tukayyid, signed shortly thereafter between ilKhan Ulric Kerensky and ComStar Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht, stipulating the Clan Invasion could not commence again for 15 years.

Had the Com Guards lost the Battle of Tukayyid, one can only speculate whether or not ComStar would have actually conceded Terra.

In the Trials to determine who would participate in the invasion, Clan Goliath Scorpion was left out of the initial wave, although they were able to take advantage of the situation. With so many units away from the homeworlds on their Crusade, many Seekers began searching through areas previously considered too heavily-defended. SaKhan Posavatz himself was nearly killed on the Smoke Jaguar world of Tranquil during one such raid, barely escaping from a terrible battle outside the city of Blood River. He would later win a Trial of Possession against Clan Steel Viper in 3049 for the right to accompany them into the Inner Sphere, taking with him his retinue and a Star of 'Mechs.

* added the info about a Star From Clan Goliath Scorpion be involved in the Clan Invasion.
* Added the info about Clan Diamond Sharks.

The Comstar Cartographic Corps date on this map is 3067. This map must be taken from a "younger" publication.

The pic looks very similar to that on Pg.55 of Era Report 3052.

OP:

In case the battle was lost at Tukayyid, it is more than likely that the radical elements within Comstar would have made their move. In fact, I have reason to believe that it wouldn't have mattered at all. The forces tasked with the defense of Tukayyid were deemed expendable, including their leader Anastasius Focht. The archives also mention Operation Scorpion, which was the peak of arrogance and manipulation, easily on par with the Amaris Coup.

The moment you put the pieces together (and a few more), you realize who basically ran communication (blackouts), espionage and information ever since then. You also realize who knows and 'guides' everything. By force, if necessary. That said, almost nothing escapes Comstar's notice and if it does, they will drop all pretence and move openly. See the 4th Succession War or the Helm memory core discovery to know what I mean.

Then there's also the fact that the head of House Marik was supposedly killed in an explosion along with his father and resurfaced again, visually disfigured and changed in character (his wife's irritation was a dead give-away) with strong ties to Comstar (all of a sudden). Fun fact: Liao was capable enough to replace Hanse Davion with a very convincing double that didn't look like scarface and fooled even the closest persons, except one.

So to those in the know, it would appear that House Marik has been under control of Comstar ever since the 'resurrection' of Thomas Marik, who is often referred to as Primus-in-Exile. The fact that FWL/Comstar was tasked with the mass production of Field Refit Kits is just the icing on the cake, securing them the means to 'guide' the Clan War efforts. Without these kits the salvaged Clan Tech was practically useless. Comstar controlled the spread of new technology and incredible power once again.

Let's recap: if Tukayyid would have been a bust, then Operation Scorpion would have commenced unhindered. Failing that, remaining Comstar units thoughout the Inner Sphere would have likely answered the call to arms and assembled around Terra and/or meshed with FWL units to launch a counter-attack on Terra. Meanwhile the more radical elements on Terra would fall back to what I call 'protocol extremis' or in other words: the use of NBC weapons to scour the planet's surface of any 'infection'. Nuclear weapons and communication blackouts, this is what Comstar actually means when they intend to 'enlighten' humanity.

Well, I hope that helped you a bit to put things into a proper perspective. You can read up on all of it and draw your own conclusions. I can recommend those novels dealing with the Gray Death Legion, simply because their leader has been targetted and threatened by Comstar ever since the beginning of the series.

Cheers =)

One month away. I wonder if the ISN will only post about the loss on contact with the periphery realms.

Didn't mater if com star didn't give up Terra. The main goal for the clans was to decide who the ilClan would be. As it was clans were luck to loose because clan wolf would have been the big winner, that say only 2 wins, 1 draw for the clans com star just kicked ***.

How can you have an ilKhan if you do not have Terra?

I think you are getting confused. The ilKhan is a position voted on by the Clan Council on who should lead all the Clans. The ilClan is the Clan that successfully captures & secures Terra.

Both Wolf & Jade Falcon began their IS campaign on March 20th, 3050. There is no evidence ( at least none that I have found) that would indicate that the Ghost Bears & Smoke Jaguars started later. Given the cooperation between the Clans because of the coordination of ilKhan Leo Showers at that time of Operation Revival, I would make an educated guess that the original four Clans landed on the same day (in different places of course).

However, the Khan of the ilClan does become the ilKhan, and all ilKhans following will only come from the ilClan

ilKhan is the Clans War Chief. This position is voted in by the Clans Council, which is the LoreMaster of the Clans(Elected from any one of the Clans, and holds the Council in order) and the Khan and saKhan of each Clan. The ilKhan is voted in, and a new Khan is elected to take his place (most of the time. Leo Showers iirc still lead Clan Smoke Jaguar while he was ilKhan, I am not 100% sure on this, this late at night).

The ilKhan is to make sure the Clans are working fairly and honourably during some event. Be it the Trials of Possessions for the OmniMechs and later on the Elemental Body Armour and Phenotype or more 'recently' during Operation Revival.

yes, until such time Terra is taken then "The senior Khan of the ilClan would then become ilKhan in perpetuity, and all future ilKhans would be chosen from the ilClan."

as per the remembrance:

'For the day will come and our kin will stand
On Terra's firm soil, ready to rebuild
The Star League with their hearts and hands.
But who shall lead? Upon whose shoulders
Will the burden lie? The answer is the test;
The test is the journey. Whichever Clan
Carves its way through the barbarians
To reach that fabled cradle of us all
Shall be the vehicle of the League's rebirth. Upon
The Star League throne shall sit that Clan's
Wisest Khan. So should it be -- So shall it be.

-- The Remembrance, Passage 72, Verse 22, Lines 14-24[2]'
