We've all been there. An ally targets an enemy below your line of sight, you want to get off one good volley so you lock on. and you click FIRE a fraction of a second after the target is lost. You watch as your missiles slam right into a hill directly in front of you.
What I would like to see: a way to set a time between losing a target and being able to fire LRMs. So if the target was lost, I couldn't fire my missiles for, say, 1.5 seconds. This could be implemented as 'don't launch LRMs without a locked target' but sometimes you can fire a volley of LRMs at a fixed target without a lock necessary. I've made some good hits this way. I use this when an enemy has ECM or I don't have time to wait for a lock. I wonder if the target still gets an 'incoming missile' warning, so far it looks like they don't. You can also fire blind missiles if an enemy has AMS and you don't know where they are, just fire and watch where the AMS is firing from.
So you basically choose between three options:
Fire missiles with or without lock, no safety (what it is now)
Fire missiles with or without lock, but with safety of (player chooses) seconds
Fire missiles with lock only. (like streak SRMs)
