any time anyone talks about the awesome sucks i am morally obligated to post this image...

Funny enough the moral obligation may get it removed, look very close at the names on that list (notably the ones shown disconnected in chat)

Hell, if we're posting Awesome screenshots i can join in too, but it doesn't mean that it's a good mech, or that this happens very often...

Build was 3 PPC, 1 MLas, STD 330, sht load of heatsinks, a little skill and a lot of luck. The fact of the matter is that a decent Awesome Pilot will be an Awesome pilot in a better mech.

untrue, i tried other assault mechs and just couldnt get the results i get with the awesome, it is a good mech.
the stuff in the screenshots happens often; not much with the 8T and the 8V i barely use, but the 8R and if i get to snipe the 9M are very good mechs, 30% of the time i carry the team - around 20% i get 1 shot, but its even worse for me with other mechs.

i have heard a lot that a good awesome pilot will do better in something else but its a myth

it might not be the best mech in the game but i believe it is better than the clan mechs at least; except the timberwolf if jumping is your thing; the daishi is just easy to avoid IMO, but it is a beast nonetheless, i haven't been dying to them much though

Be fair though, the Awesome is barely an assault mech. Maybe assaults in general just don't suit your play style...

The 8V Awesome is a perfectly valid mech. Sure, it is an Awesome, and thus suffers all the drawbacks of that chassis, but it can still hit HARD.

My 2 main builds have a core of a Standard 300, Endo, DHS. After that, one build uses a pair of PPC's and a medium laser in the head, while the other uses 3 large lasers (nothing in head slot). Either one works well at range and up close - play around with it to see what you like.

yea looking at it that way that's true!! might totally be the case though the cataphract and dragon weren't my cup of tea i haven't tried many heavy mechs.

my playstyle is hitting hard with an assault arsenal like old radagast mentioned above - but then i don't like to be too sluggish either - that's probably why AWS suits me - i can pack more weaps than heavies and move better than most assault

the builds people post for the AWS just seem ridiculous to me; they're not hitting hard enough - i don't know why you would go DPS on this chassis; it's freakin suicide... you don't wanna just stand there and do anything, you wanna keep on the move.

in my mind that's one of two reasons it gets such a bad name - people putting laughable arsenals on it and the other half are people who can't handle the heat from real loadouts, sometimes i just have to hide away and cool down for a few sec! that's just how it is

Yep, THIS build is exactly why I wreck with my Quad PPC warhawk now. The 8Q was the only awesome I kept.

Sometimes, the planets align, and the universe just provides awesome things. Like that post. And like February 2015:

Or these awesome chips:

Anyhoo, OP, I like your build, but would switch out to a vanilla large laser instead of the large pulse, and ALWAYS be at the back of the group. The only real way to excel in an Awesome is to not be the focus of attention, or you'll break down faster than a fat guy caught by his kids eating cupcake wrappers because he was too lazy to get of the couch.

I also wanted some torso mounted energy hardpoints and to avoid ghost heat. My initial build is a standard 300 engine with 2 PPCs in the left shoulder, three streaks with BAP and 2.5 tons ammo in the right with CASE. A large pulse in the right arm and AMS also. Max armor. Is that a build worthy of an Awesome?

Lastly, since its well known how easy it is to core out an Awesome, is it really that bad of an idea to put an XL engine in it? I almost feel like its sort of like a Dragon in that since the ct hit box is so big you might as well put an XL in it to bring as much pain as possible before you inevitably go down. Is that wrong?

8V was my first choice as well, for much of the same reason as you - rarity, odd duck, etc. And my first build -in fact, the build I'm still using- is almost identical to the one you have. The main difference is I drop Streaks (and BAP) for standard SRM-2s. Really nice weapon once it's in a group of 3 or more, that 2-second cooldown is very fun. I may or may not also add a medium laser in the head slot, depending on whether I want an extra heat sink, AMS, or that laser. So I would say that is actually a good build, considering I always have a fun match if I take it.

As for the hitboxes, no, XL is not good on an Awesome at all. It is not only the CT that is huge, ALL the torsos are huge. They should extend the arm hitbox to cover the part that lies on top of the STs. There are several old threads here that show what I mean. Anyway, XLs would be OK in theory but with the max engine size being 300(apart from the 9M and Pretty Baby), they're not.

With the changes they just made to the Awesome in the form of quirks, this little guy will be your friend. The heat efficiency might be low on smurfy, but I assure you it's fine. You can fire all 3 PPCs on terra therma and only hit 60 some percent. And you'll like the increased dissipation rate.

This means you don't know How2Lurm properly. The most effective range for IS LRMs is around 350-250m. And it's much better to have direct fire where you can tag your target. Therefore you're 70 m away from being completely ineffective and exposed, so it takes balls to be there.

Obligatory AWS-8V screenshots (yes I posted these before). These are all pre-buff btw.
