The Blackjack simply isn't put together to regularly cope with a lot of damage,
This is only true so long as you're using an XL engine in it. Mind, an XL engine is necessary if you want to run a slapjack (20/ML/ML), but I at least do better in my Blackjacks with 225 standard engines- one toting an LB10-X and three medium lasers, and the other a pair of ERLL and four mediums. My LB-X jack has three jets (and CASE) and the other has two jets- which I find to be enough lift and anti-fallspeed for anything short of hopping down Alpine hills or the full canyon in Canyon Network.
With a Standard engine it's easy to make use of the giant rear-side-torsos of the Blackjack, and the front torso hitboxes are pretty well split up. Put together with its book-like flatness front to back, and the 'jack can soak hits alarmingly well.
That said, if you want to stick with an AC/20, you kinda need the XL engine- but three jets should be fine for most situations.
