So I just put together a new computer and have been trying out my favorite games. I have:

core i5 4690k oc to 4.4ghz
nvidia geforce gtx 780 3gb (337.88 release drivers)
16 gb 2133mhz RAM
Corsair H110 water cooler

I monitor my GPU and CPU temps with MSI afterburner and it uses RivaTunerStatisticsServer to display these on screen.

During gameplay with pretty much everything maxed at 1920x1080 (motion blur is off vsync always on) I run about GPU temp of 67C. This is fine, other more intensive games sometimes run this up a bit higher.

While in Mechlab view with a mech displayed I run 62-64C at ~95% GPU usage. If I so much as alt-tab to another process like MSI or a web browser, my GPU temp drops 10 degrees and the GPU usage goes down to 55% even though mech lab is still displaying in the background behind my web browser.

All of this is at ~60 fps because I always use vsync when available.

Why is mechlab so gpu intensive? Is mechlab secretly decoding alien radio signals using my GPU?

PS Please don't tell me to blow out my case. It is brand new, everything in it is brand new and it has a whole lot of air flow.

EDIT: The high temp/gpu usage occur if I hit "HOME" and display the static mech model as well.

Are you running dual monitors? I've been having a lot of issues with MWO, once I disabled my extended desktop, i gained 10fps and the mechlab smoothed out.

No. Just one monitor.

MWO requires a lot more than it should ... I will leave it at that.

It's just MWO being MWO.

actually, it's a very common problem in many games. 99% of the time, the menus do NOT have frame cap so your GPU keeps generating frame after frame after frame (my favourite was a game (don't remeber the name) that would order GPU to generate over 10 000 frames per second in 2d menus (yep. ten thousand)).

<sigh>
Gone are the times of giving players any control over the game. Anyone still remember how easy it was to configure every small aspect of, say, q3 engine?

Which is why i specifically made certain to mention that I was running vsync which caps my frames at 60fps. Fascinatingly, I get 60 fps in game, but often mechlab runs at 50 fps. This [ the heat and high gpu usage issue] is something wrong with the mechlab, not with my settings.

If memory servers right, mechlab is limited to 50fps by PGI to save up on GPU-usage.

There was some talk about it a couple months back with some of the devs chiming in but I can't recall any specifics.

a ) mechlab runs at 60 FPS according to in-game measurement
b ) you don't want to tell me that mechlab is more HW-intensive than the actual game, do ya?
