The reason why I'm in favor of a pre-launch map filter instead of an in-game vote feature is so that it doesn't punish people who like unpopular maps.
Plus it avoids all that annoying spam you see in some games where everyone screams: "VETO VETO VETO, FK U VETO!" at the start of every round.

People have been gaming that crap in Call of Duty for years. It results in exactly the thing that needs to be avoided at all costs, and that is knowing where you're going before you have to pick a 'Mech to go there with. As soon as you can pick a 'Mech after the map is selected, we're never going to see anything but cripplingly overspecialized ridicu-boats again, save for the bare handful of players out there too stubborn and ornery to give a care. And they'll never make any headway in the game again because every time they turn around they'll be fighting 'Mechs specifically tailored for the one single map they're being deployed on. Those grotesquely overspecialized scows will never have to pay the price for their overspecialization again. You can, in fact, do nothing but play your Boomjag on River City, because you can skip out on any lobby in which River City or one of its equivalents isn't an option, or alternatively you can just switch to your favorite jumpsniper if the map choice doesn't go your way.
This. Isn't. Call. Of. Duty. Your choice of 'Mech is supposed to MATTER. Your ability to make that choice of 'Mech perform in all situations and environments is supposed to matter. You're not supposed to be able to dodge all sense, logic, and sanity and build a 'Mech for each map which is incapable of functioning on any other map, except that never matters anymore.
The only way - THE ONLY WAY - this garbage works is if the player picks his 'Mech as now, clicks Launch as now, and is stuffed in a lobby only after his choice of 'Mech is locked in. Then he gets to pick between his two maps, but if he drops the lobby because it doesn't have his point-blank paradise in it, his 'Mech is still locked until that game finishes out. No "Whoops, there's Mordor! Don't need speed, do need crazay heat efficiency. Better switch over to my heat-map Cataphract. Hah HAH! Joke's on you Mr. Matchmaker-san!"
Because that **** right there could very well be a mortal blow to MWO.
