Is there a reason why Ghost Heat, Gauss Charge and other jury-rigged semi-solutions can't be replaced by a simple global cooldown system? If each weapon type has a mandatory global cooldown set to, say, between 0-1 second, during which no weapon can be fired, wouldn't that solve a lot of the pinpoint damage problems, while still allowing smaller weapons to compete (by giving them lower g-cooldown times, or even none at all).
Med lasers could, for example, be set to a g-cooldown value of 0.2, allowing a few of them to be fired without noticeable drawback, until you start firing 8-10 of them simultaneously. PPCs or Gauss could on the other have g-cooldowns of 0.5-1 second each, forcing the pilot to effectively chainfire them, while still benifiting from multiple guns as individual cooldowns go up to 4, as normal.
I've racked my brains to come up with any negative arguments to this, and the only possible drawback is the removal of the newbies favorite, the alpha-strike. This could actually be big from PGIs standpoint, as they might cling to it as a way to awe beginners into playing the game. I dearly hope that isn't the case though.
Another argument could be that they want the players to impose these firing restrictions themselves in order to manage heat, but in that case they're jumping through a whole loot of hoops to accomplish this, and it still doesn't seem to be working.
Anyway, I'd love to hear other arguments against this idea.
