Has anyone identified what causes this and how to fix it? You get hot, your mech steams and suddenly framerate drops to nothing and its extremely frustrating.

Nothing else in the game gives me framerate drop but this.

I did something that fixed it, I just can't remember what it was.

I lowered something in the video properties...particles, environment...and it was fixed. I just can't remember what it was.

It would have been particles. Having a hot 'Mech means the steam particles fly right into the camera- if any particles are too close to the camera, then performance will drop dramatically. So yeah, try lowering your particle settings.
