Try the trial mechs out and decide a weight class, mediums are IMO easiest for beginners, enough speed to run away from the heavy hitters and usually enough firepower to get kills and assists somewhat easily.
Shadowhawk is a great mech now, since it has 3 inexpensive chassis variants and it can mount a AC20 + jump jets.

Jagermech JM6-S is a great mech, and affordable.

Jagermechs are also good with a standard engine, so that's also a cost saver.

You will want to get 3 variants so you can master them.

The Jager has decent diversity. The DD doesn't have much advantage over the S because its hard to make use of 6 ballistic slots.

The JM6-A is an OK missile boat, good enough to experiment with missiles... Though it is my least favorite jager.

The firebrand is a great hero mech. You can do many of the same builds on the JM6-S so that can help you decide if you want to spend real money.

Additionally, the catapult K2 may suit your tastes.
The catapult C1 is a good energy/ missile jumper.
The jester hero catapult is good energy jumper.

Also can't go wrong with the shadowhawks... Blackjack bj-1 also can be good if you like ballistic and energy weapons, but at only 45 tons you are a little limited. I like AC20+3 medium lasers. There is a champion build like that which is trial mech on occasion.
