I don't think so. It gives specific variants. Champion/Phoenix versions are good but heros are not.

Yeah, it was this wording that got me:

Yeah, I re-read it. It pretty much says 'anything BUT hero mechs... cuz if you buy a Hero mech we're pretty much laughing at you anyway.'

.Yes, but it's a different variant. Not just a CTD-3D (C) but CTD-ILA.
Hero mechs are the wrong sort of 'special'.

The Misery is a Dragoon variant IIRC so should be exempt from a House Challenge.
Correction... I had the wrong Pilot/Mech!

Yeah, the specific referent to "other special variant" is Sarah's Jenner, as noted a couple times above.
-If Grid Iron were eligible, then Grid Iron Limited Edition (or whatever the alternate Grid Iron is called) would have been.
-If Clan 'Mechs were eligible, then the Gold and Invasion primes would have been.
