As a new player I made the decision to buy a Commando for my first custom mech. Now that I've played for a good bit I'd like to sell this mech but only after I max out the basic exp tree for this version of Commando.
My question is, if I sell the mech will I only lose the items equipped on them and keep the items unequipped from it? Also, will the exp tree earned from that mech be reset?

Selling Mechs, items and exp?

You will only lose what is in the mech when you sell it. The xp tree will not be reset.

You will keep the items if you don't sell them. Far as the exp goes, I have no idea.

When you sell a Mech, you sell the chassis itself and if you decide to, you sell the items as well. XP remains intact so it's a good idea that you max out the Mech Tree before selling it.

At least in CB you retained the XP for the variant that you sold, so it would be there if you later bought that mech again. I assume that it is still like that, but I am not positive.

As other have said.
I would just like to add (as it surprised me before), if you earn enough xp on a given mech to unlock the mech tree all the way to the end (ie Master level) but only unlock the basic level before selling it (and lets say you still have 60K mech xp available), then move on to two more variants and do the same, even though you have enough mechxp (ie 60K in this example) to unlock Elite level on the first mech, if you dont own it you cant spend the mechxp.
Unless this changes I would advise you to own three variants of a given mech till you unlock the entire skill tree for all three before selling one off. This way you don't have to waste cbils buying variants you don't intend to keep again just to spend the mechxp you already have.

I assumed he din't like the mech and was not gonna buy 2 more commandos to get to elite.

Good advice. tho with the commando it wont cost as much to flip flop as it did with my hunchbacks in closed beta... still by flip flopping (if only for your last slots) you can have 4 elite mechs per bay

You're better off keeping it and getting 2 other commando's so you can go all of the way with XP. That is unless you plan on going to another chassis.
