So if they allow drop ships to be used prior to match start to allow us to choose one of 4 mechs at some point, wouldnt the merc units be responsible for fielding Jump ships rather than Dropships?

I dont know much about jump ships or their classes, and am curious how they are going to do possible dropship modes and so on, more than anything else.
Mostly because I am hoping to see them add 1/1/1/1 dropships for us to choose a mech from before entering battle.

This would also make it super easy for matchmaker. If the players were using all 4 mechs, one of each class during the match.

A lot of merc corps in the lore would use jumpships offered by the faction they were hired by. Only a few actually had their own jumpships. So dropships make sense to me but merc corps owning and running their own jumpships not so much.

Dropships come in different sizes and are capable of carrying different numbers of mechs and equipment depending on the size of the dropship. Jumpships are what carry the drop ships from one part of the galaxy to the next. Mercs would be very unlikely to have a jumpship.

I think the leopard Class DROPSHIP is a 4 mech carrier = perfect for a lance (1/1/1/1) and for smaller groups (4 man group)

Jumpships use docking collars to carry Drops ships.

I could see Houses or Contractor Holders providing JUMP SHIPs and Mercs or Merc Corps having their own Drop Ships.

We shall see = hopefully

Dropship = SUV
Jumpship = Ferry that takes the family across the water to that lovely island or other side of river so they can drive to a park over there.

Think of it that way and you will understand why Merc Corps don't typically own Jumpships. It's not economical to run one unless you are transporting lots and lots of Dropships or cargo ships.

Why are bringing this up? This was my dream. They have placed it indefinitely on the back burner. This is just salt in the wound.

I think Wolf's Dragoons were the only mercs that had their own jumpship. I could be wrong though. Like other people have already mentioned, dropships are much cheaper, since their main purpose is controlled falling and delivering mechs from the jumpship to the battlefield. That said, I would love to see Aerotech implemented in this game, but that's beyond a realistic expectation.

Ok so in the books and board game Jump ships wouldnt be owned by a Merc Corp. but for this wouldnt it make more sense if the players had the ability to have their own drop ship, and the merc corps provide the jumpships?

I wouldnt mind saving c-bills or even mc for a dropship of my own :P A player owned 4 mech dropship doesnt seem like to much.

But it also sounds cool if a merc corp saves for a dropship, and faction players using their clan/house dropships.

How will this all work is the question.

Meh.... All will sux anyways because the dropship will not even be a part of the game, you will never see it on the field of play (which would be really cool). It will just be business as usual, death match, catch a tracked whatever base thingy, or capture the flag. :P

This and there are several who actually just wing it and pay as they go on merchant jumpers.

Would be AWESOME to have an asteroid map with a jumpship in an internal cavern/hangar (as depicted in Stackpole's novel where the Kell Hounds save Melissa from the snakes, the battle where Patrick Kell dies).

Way to much cheerfulness in this thread for the topic. Let me drop some Russ on y'all:

Russ: "I still really like the game mode idea. But it's only shot at implementation at the moment is with CW and in some epic battle aspect where you bring 4 mechs to the fight, essentially turning the battle into a 48v48 battle of attrition. At the moment it is not in production."

Sorry, but I can't suffer alone. Farewell, Dropship mode...

lol ... MWO only superficially adheres to the lore. Otherwise, I wouldnt own a regiment of battle mechs.
