The funny thing about 'Mech cockpits is that the windshields are actually sometimes made out of the toughest material found on a 'Mech. They are either plasteel or ferro-glass. The later is used for the view ports for dropships and jumpships and is tougher than the armored hull plates on those vessels.

So yeah, small arms fire and the head? Not usually as big a problem as it first sounds, well at least not until all the laser rifle scars start obscuring vision. Man portable support weapons like man-pack PPCs and support (small) lasers are the trouble makers. SRMs are a bigger problem, but normally that is because infantry doesn't play fair and carries infernos. Those can effectively blind a 'Mech with a headshot in urban combat because mag-scan is worthless in urban areas and everything else is covered in burning gel. Being blind with infantry about never ends well.

On the topic of Gundum, I liked Gundum Wing myself, but the story was painfully long. (Think original Macross series in length)

Original Macross series was great in part because of the length and depth of the saga. It's stuff like Dragonball or Voltron even, where every episode ends exactly the same, that I really hate to see drawn out. My favorite series are ones like Macross (Though I actually like the American Robotech re-imagining better, overall), Space Battleship Yatamoto, and especially, Armored Trooper Votoms, a lot more than I have ever been able to like Gundam.
Used one of the newer Votoms in this fan video I put together a couple of years ago

Always wished that Votoms would get more video game love...though I think Heavy Gear borrowed largely from it.

Anyhow..... yeah, 8 MG and a BAP should help with that pesky infantry issue. But sometimes sensors mk I are more useful.
