The problem with brawling Stalkers is they are slow and except 3F have very narrow torso twist angle (around 60o to each side). Both can be compensated by good piloting, and as mentioned by predecessors Stalker can distribute incoming damage among side torsos/central really nicely.
But 5M however while can be a good brawler shines as laser boat (300STD engine,5xLL/4xERLL,23DHS,no endo) or LRM boat (2xALRM10,3xALRM5,4xML,TAG,plenty of ammo, endo)

I've just bought 3 Stalkers in the sale, and as the 5M has double heatsinks, I'm playing it while I get Cbills for DHS for the others. I'm not going well. Here's my build: STK-5M
Is this build simply not viable? I've tried various tactics, and I can't seem to get a good result for me and the team. If I go charging in within the first ~3 minutes, I make a REALLY good distraction, my team gets a good opportunity to attack the enemies, I go down with barely any damage, and my team is likely to win. If I hang back, my team usually ends up getting picked off one by one, and eventually I end up fighting several enemies at once. I get a lot of damage this way, but it's a loss.
I generally pilot fast mechs, so I might be making some errors in positioning, but I'm thinking the stalker might just be a bad SRM boat. Does a build like this work for anyone else?

STK-5M SRM brawler is a scary build, just need to play it smart. it is the strongest when there is good cover for you to peek and unload SRMs in people's faces.
Also, your build is unoptimised. Try this. SRM6 without Artemis is a waste, the spread of the SRMs is too wide
Remember to open your missile bay doors such that all 30 missiles are unloaded at once and when you're brawling, don't use the lasers unless it's to finish off your opponent. in an intensive brawl, you want to keep unloading your main armaments, the SRMs
