There's also this thing called conservation of momentum and impulse. The more massive object is less likely to experience changes in direction or speed. Why do you think you can throw a ball at a brick wall and have the wall not move despite it having no kinetic energy? Now, I realize real world physics does not apply because this is a video game, especially one made by PGI, but seriously...know your physics.

It's like throwing a brick at a stack of 2 - 5 bricks.

http://youtu.be/UpYwtn_7nvw?t=6m30s I knew I saw that first video before.

Okay, here's your math for a 35 tonne firestarter running at 150 km/h trying to move a 100 tonne atlas standing still on concrete on Earth.

Resistance from friction
n = coefficient of friction * mass * gravity
n = 1 * 100 tonnes * 1000 kg/tonne * 9.81 m/s^2
n = 981,000 kg*m/s^2 (aka Newtons)

Kinetic energy
e = 1/2 * 35 tonnes * 1000 kg/tonne * (41.66 m/s)^2 <-- 150 km/h = 41.66 m/s
e = 30,372,223 kg*m^2/s^2 (aka Joules)

Joules / Newtons = Meters
30, 372, 223 kg*m^2/s^2 / 981,000 kg*m/s^2 = 30.96 m

So that firestarter is going to make that Atlas move 31m when it hits it. An Atlas is about 16m tall? In relative terms, imagine being hit so hard you get tossed 12 feet back. It's quite a fair distance.

Edit: added some details

Best to simply slot speeds into SLOW/MEDIUM/FAST. Assign the range and test it out. You shouldn't be knocking bits off unless the mech is already almost dead. It's an act of desperation, not offensive ability.

We don't need more reasons to spam high-tonnage mechs.

If charging was implemented into this game like it is in the actual boardgame, your problem isn't going to be the Assault 'Mechs. It'll be the Heavy 'Mechs with big engines. Which would be great, because then this could happen.

Collisions and knockdowns aren't enough for me. Sometimes I really want to just run up to an enemy mech and punch them in the face, cleave them in half with a hatchet or kick them in the crotch!

Giving the ability to use melee weapons and do physical attacks to IS mechs only would really help to fix the imbalance we have right now between IS and Clan. It's even staying true to Battletech lore.

It would also be nice to have destructible environments. Selective like it was in MW3 and MW4, where you can destroy trees, streetlights, cars and small buildings; but you can't destroy rocks, and cliffsides and hardened buildings. (Does anyone wish they could destroy the little statues on River City?)

The Cryengine this game uses supports all the things I listed, but PGI says they don't want to do it because it might lag some of the lower end computers.

I think that's just a lame excuse to cover up the fact that no one at PGI really understands Cryengine very well, and they can't figure out how to program for it well enough to add those things. I really wish they would hire someone who can do it and put it in the game. The new players it would bring in if we had those things would far outweigh any players lost who's computer couldn't handle it. Plus if you think about it, the players that have old crappy computers don't have much money to spend on "free to play" games. The players with the top of the line high end gaming systems will throw lots of money at PGI if they really enjoy the game.

With the two shoulder and top mounted guns, absolutely. I don't care how much everything else is modernized, as long as it has those in place, and retains a knightly appearance.

*Although looking again, it's 3068 production year, so even if they do one day add melee, I won't hold my breath.

When will collisions* and knockdowns come back?

When Goons no longer heart Paul.

Nothing worse than seeing a bunch of jerks being school yard bullies, cackling and reveling in it the whole time. It's amazing how a gang/group mentality brings out the absolute worst in us.

If they designed the game right, that sort of griefing isn't possible. It's up to the devs to make the game right and avoid that. I believe it was done on purpose to show that it needs fixing, so, they took it out instead.

It's both sides are responsible...yeah, the devs missed the significance of the bad mechanic, but those guys went about showing it to Paul the wrong way. The bad mechanic wasn't malicious, the bullying was...and no matter what message they meant to send, it was eventually lost to the group as their behavior devolved into sadism.

The ends didn't justify the means, no message, no matter how true and accurate, is worth losing one's humanity over it.

I just wish knock down is implemented so that those lighter mechs will fall flat on their arses when they try to over take me and lower my armor to 99% at the start of the game every time.

Weren't you here back then?

That video was shot after months and months of us telling PGI that the collision and knockdown code was broken and them going "meh, whatever, deal with it".

But then the match in the Goon video happened and the very next patch the knockdowns were patched out.

We tried for months to tell them that "bullying" like that was going on in just about every single match, but they wouldn't listen; not until the Goons managed to bully Paul and make it public.

I was around, I remember it...all those packs of Dragons running around machine gunning and tackling people...get enough of them coming at you and all you saw was this barreling down on you...

Hell, I routinely tackled harassing lights in my light as they buzzed about my heavier teammates. But these guys could have conveyed their point better...they could have demonstrated the exploit, but handled it in a manner that wasn't bullying. Obviously Paul was the last mech, they could have had a guy respectfully explaining the concern in chat while the others knocked him down for a bit as a demonstration. Eventually letting him up and having a dialogue before coring him...dont forget, he was a captive audience at this point. The point would have been the same,mthe results likely would have been the same...but they wouldn't have fell a rung down the evolutionary ladder for a few minutes.

Lights still get stopped prettymuch dead in their tracks by anyone who runs into them, so it's not like knockdown is necessary for that purpose.

Every mech has them, just checked on the vindicator. They appear to be tailored to the mech as well so they are not just a vestige from an old template or something.
