This might sound really really silly......

But i DONT want a test area.
i do have a reason. Its just, the build up, the wonder and awe of that first time you pilot your mech is wonderful. Getting in it and learning how to handle it. going for looks over specs and the like. Thats what i enjoy.

I find that if i can have all the stuff and pick and choose it doesnt have the same value. I cant aford the atlas but lets try it,,,, oh thats what its like, pass.... I mean im glad i didnt buy it to find out, But people will just hop into the training room and test them all out and find one. Rather than the excperience of getting in for the first time and trying it..

Does that make sense ?

You are right, to me it sounds silly. Sorry, but my opionion differs.
I really love Battletech and Mechwarrior but the controls are not like any other FPS and not even like old Mechwarrior.
I'd still like a place to practice running around just to learn better control. Durring a firefight you need to be here or there and then you maybe dead, there is no time to learn except very painfully. A person who is not committed to the Mechwarrior universe may just decide to go elsewhere for their entertainment if the learning curve is too difficult or too frustraiting. Games should be fun, a place to run a practice mech around and shoot at targets will not unbalance the game or take away any "Wonder". It will releave the fear of being completly clueless and help with the first baby steps towards piloting. If there is no retail box with a users manual then something is needed for new players.

I think they will do something like what League of Legends does where every week they have free champions for you to try before you buy. So MWO could do the same thing by offering 4 or more different mechs with different variants so that you can try them out and find the variant and mech that works the best for your playstyle.

Yeah I am not a big fan of the test area idea either. There's something to be said for people sometimes buying stuff that sucks for them...it really encourages people to try to make due with stuff that seems bad or to come up with new play styles. I feel like a test area would just encourage everybody to run the same gear and really cut down on the diversity. Also, the fact that there are a certain number of people dropping into each match with new stuff they don't know how to play or haven't tested adds a lot to the instability of each match. It would kinda suck if every single person in every single match has already spent a bunch of time polishing their setup offline.

There's also something to be said for the draw of gradually saving up for something really expensive because you're always thinking about how cool it would be to run a particular item/mech. It's the primary driver of keeping players playing and keeping people buying MC. If everybody can just "simulate" any gear, the lure of high priced stuff will suffer a pretty big hit.

I think the idea of a tutorial mission/missions is a GREAT idea to get new players up to speed with the controls and everything...but a test area where you can just get whatever gear you want seems like a terrible idea IMO.

I think you are talking about different things here.

An area where you can try out new configs, practice driving, shooting, etc with gear you already own is fine and takes away nothing from anybody. There is simply no reason not to have this other than the time it would take to implement it.

Somewhere along the way this got warped into being able to try everything in the game for free or something, which is just goofy.

as a new player to this game, I really would like to have an area where I can just run around and focus on getting the controls down, instead of that AND survival. It really isn't much fun going in, getting blown up while trying to get the movement down. The video is good, but it's not the same as getting in and getting the feel for the keys yourself.

I'd like to lrn2ply before being thrown into a team and hold them back.
