first thanks to LIghtfoot for posting this video (grrr it wont link to time index right, skip to 2:26)

the part that happens next made an epic idea dawn on me first look at this game
Natural selection 2

skip to 1:53 to see the FPS game play part
then skip to about 3:05 to see commander mode

this is the epic part.

Imagine if as a possible game mode, maybe a prolonged battle mode or something just for tourneys. PGI creates a hybrid mode like in natural selection 2
giving one player command control like you have in natural selection 2, but as a Mech Commander.

just like in natural selection 2, that players main job is to coordinate your base, get upgrades and defenses and control AI units (tanks, infantry, VTOL etc etc) while also being able to issue individual commands to mechs and lances.

Again for solo play this position would have to have requirements (X games played, X wins, X ELO etc etc)

i have honestly always dreamed of a FPS RTS strategy game, while i always pictures more of a Starcraft FPS where players could control individual units FPS style natural selection is closest ive seen. Having a game like that but mechwarrior style would be just beautiful.

It would also be amazing as something for Community warfare. Groups would have their own bases and such and other groups could raid/attack them (part of a tourney maybe? or ladder system) One player is the commander of base rest are the fighters.

again i know it will probably never happen but my god imagine some of the level of EPIC we could see..... insane part would be it would be possible to have the commander role playable from a tablet......(PC for life mind you but hey wouldnt it be nice to be at work or somewhere away from a computer and get a mechwarrior fix?)

Problem you always get when people try this - and it's actually been tried before, at least once that I know of (Armored Core 5. What a dismal abomination...) - is that the commander isn't happy unless his people do exactly what he tells them to when he tells them to do it regardless of the cost to themselves ("don't worry dude, your bloody sacrifice will totally save the game!"), and the pilots aren't happy unless they can play where and as they wish ("dude screw you I'm not staring down three Dire Whales to buy five extra seconds for you to construct an additional pylon!"). You would need a pretty well-oiled team of folks who all know and trust each other and have practiced together a lot to make the system even begin to work. Puglies? Forget it.

To say nothing of how impossibly complex it would be to actually code up and implement.

More trouble than it's worth, in just about every sense. Would need to've been a part of the game from the beginning; trying to hammer it in now would largely cause nothing but problems.

well thats why i saw either HEAVILY limit it for public games, or only use it for private matches an tourney games.

At which point you've created an enormous new feature, as big if not bigger than U.I. 2.0 given the amount of resources and new assets needed to create an entirely new fundamental mode of play (top-down observer rather than in-the-cockpit MechWarrior)...that doesn't show up in the public queue at all.

Not happening, man. If they have trouble justifying new maps because they can't be directly monetized, then there's no way in any single one of the ninety-nine Hells they're going to add MechCommander to this game for the minuscule handful of people who make heavy use of private match modes.

I wouldn't mind seeing a much simpler variation of this for CW. Basically a combat coordinator who doesn't spawn in as a mech, but has the ability to lay down icons and waypoints on the map. He wouldn't necessarily be a a Commander...though he could operate as one. Mech pilots would be able to toggle these icons on(defaulting off at spawn in.

The coordinator would just have a top down, static version of the map. No 3D models, no target data/information that isn't already provided to own team mechs through line of sight or sensors...so no Gods eye view.

He can highlight a target dorito that others already see, lay down information icons or waypoints. The mechanics behind this would be basically a friendly mech with no body, but the same data links and the ability to lay down icons.

Except in our game, where the TBR would have either dropped arty on the raven and/or corner humped and sniped it down to a avoid coming fully around the corner.

Meanwhile the raven team mates would have cored one another from behind while on the way to the waypoint, then turned and bumped into eachother at the first sight of the TBR, giving it free shots at their exposed rear internals...

A blue gender type game with mechs would be awesome.

I liked mechcommander a ton too. But we sort of already have it with the command role in the game.
