The problem with the Challenge wasn't the challenge, it was all the players that were disconnect farming or just committing suicide and cycling through mechs to get the challenge done as quickly as possible. This totally sucked the fun out of playing this weekend.

The next change should be about earning experience. Not only do you got to win to get max XP but you also have to be in the thick of fighting actually actively participating to get decent amounts of XP. 20,000 XP wins a mech bay, 40,000 XP the premium time etc. Also to make it fair, only the base XP counts. No bonus XP from premium or hero mechs.

I completely agree with the OP.

While challenges by themselves are great and 6.5mil while being a decent reward is something anyone can live without, getting the 50 victories ends up being very tedious. Not sure if its the current state of the game or just me sort of being over the hype of a new mechwarrior game and just waiting to see if PGI actually manage to pull something off. Probably a little bit of both. But while playing 1 or 2 games per day on a day where i feel like it can be entertaining, trying to grind 50 victories over a weekend is not fun but closer to torture. And when i decide its just not worth it i feel like im missing out.

So i either a) force myself to get the wins and resent the game or b)i give up and resent myself for not going for the top prize and the game for giving me the carrot on a stick while having another stick handy to make it hurt if i try to reach for the carrot.

What exactly is not enjoyable about winning games? Is your goal to lose them?

Challenge: Play the game, try to win!

Forum: Posted Image

We may disagree in some things but this made my night.

The awkward moment when people complaining how its a Solo Q Challenge only and that's what i already play 90% of the time.

In summary, this is how i see it from my point of view.

PGI: FREE STUFF! YOU CAN DO UP TO 50! BUT THERE ARE REWARDS IN BETWEEN! ...but only for soloQ, because we fear some will abuse small pools of full groups, or something we didn't think of just in case.

Part of the Community: WINING IS IMPOSSIBLE IN THE COURSE OF 90HRS. CHALLENGE IS BROKEN.

p.s. I honestly would of loved there to be a 100 or 200 win prize be a gold cockpit trophy or something, man. The forums would of exploded, and i would of completed it by this point.

@ OP: You're just burned out. Take a break.
.. or not, since the clock is ticking on your premium time :).

@ the haters.

TL:DR version:

"...play can become work when we get paid. The person who previously enjoyed painting pictures, weaving baskets, playing the cello or even writing blog posts, suddenly finds the task tedious once money has become involved.

Yes, sometimes rewards do work, especially if people really don’t want to do something. But when tasks are inherently interesting to us rewards can damage our motivation by undermining our natural talent for self-regulation."

That said, I won't ever say no to free stuff.

I don't know if the 50 win achievement was the tipping point, but the games gives me a feeling or work and not play.

Maybe if it was 50 wins in a group or solo then the social aspect could kick in. For now its just mindless grinding which is just pushing me away.

The 50 wins really shifts the mental reward mechanism away from skilled combat (a job well done to be celebrated with others) to just mindless numbers.

A word to all the Devs, there is really a dangerous tipping point that where the game just isn't enjoyable anymore. This must be counter balanced by good community and community play.

Niko, you should absolutely convey this to the higher ups. This is a big underlying issue that will lose people forever. The game should never feel meh.

PS: When a large challenge with a large reward is not achieved. IT creates a counter active feeling of loss. (stock traders profit loss folly, even when there is a gain, it feels like a loss) The priorities shift from "I wanted to do that" to " I should have done that". In a larger scale this is poison to the game because it shift the balance from "play" to "work". It shift the balance from "enjoyment with no downside" to "responsibility with consquences"

Advice: avoid "large achievements". Have smaller, more frequent small scale challenges. Make challenge as community objective and not a solo objective.

Games been fun as ever for me. Do you really think or are self-centered enough to think your dissatisfaction with the game would somehow transfer over to all other players?

With that being said, it is pointless grinding right now. It's fun (for me), but , they really, really need to release Community Warfare (and deliver) , or else they are going to lose a lot of players.

I hear what you're saying but there are actually some of us old timers (closed beta) who drop in PuGs exclusively ... and it's not as bad as you all make it out to be.

While I didn't need any of the rewards, I didn't find the challenge pointless or boring at all. However I'm also not blinded by the rewards and feel like I've missed out if I didn't achive it so I digress that they should make the rewards a tad smaller to make it less of a grind and something more enjoyable.

Think about it for a while. There is a reason why there were 3 reward levels. Not every one is or has to be a so-called completionist.

I myself only wanted, and got, my 10 wins. And I did it at a leisurely pace, in-between a massage, food, drinks, sleep, and everything else I do on weekends. :)

I find that its not the game that keeps me here. It's the gaming community that I'm a part of that keeps me here to be honest.

Creovex pretty much summed up exactly why i hate these forums.

Big picture, people. Big picture. You know, the one where we might not have a mechwarrior game anymore if this stuff keeps up?

It's barely a MechWarrior game at the moment.

I think that a lot of people forget that in order for them to have higher win ratios there are just as many players out there with negative win ratios. For me I think this challenge took over 12 hours of real playing every match until the end and that with a win ratio over 2. I sympathize with the many players that are playing way more than they want to just because they want to complete this challenge. Losing is not fun and is downright punishing when you know that every loss is potentially 10-15 more minutes that you have to keep grinding. I liked 10 out of the 12 hours that I grinded the challenge. 24 hours would have been horrible and totally not worth it. While the challenge was rewarding for me, it had the opposite affect for others and I realize that. Have some sympathy guys. We want the new, and less successful players to enjoy themselves so that they stick around and become better. And thanks for all the schwag PGI.

I actually would rather they did not have fun if I have been shoehorned onto their team and they play like the Wizard of Oz wasn't at home when Dorothy took them there to see about getting a brain.

I'm hardly a great player, and I will never have a k:d of 5:1 or a w:l of 3:1, but seriously: put newbies and the incompetent with newbies and the incompetent, and don't drag everyone else down by shovelling them onto a map with a team full of tripe.

The 50 win grind was true horror to behold simply due to the matchmaking, and quite frankly, I intend to spend my week off work playing anything other than MWO as a result.

I did the full 50. Most in the kitfoxes though.

Had a lot of fun playing, would have had more fun if some of the drop could have been group drops.

We just hung out in a channel and chatted, good times.

It became much harder to win matches this weekend. My mech would get hit by 2-3 artillery strikes each match. I don't use arty, but I was forced to make my mech better by removing AMS for more weaponry and I had to shelve my AWS-8Q with the new spit-wad PPCs since it couldn't keep up and has no Ballistic slot.

I pulled it back together, but it's more like I go on a rampage to win anymore. Time to Kill is very short now since the PPC fix. Go figure. Seems like Mech Combat should take a good deal longer though. Whats the point of all that encumbering armor if the mechs get killed in 2-4 hits? It is a bit disappointing this way.

Where have you proved this??? Russ said it himself, the property went UNTOUCHED for 8 years (need to double check number) by Microsoft to say the least (This is the same company that wasted billions on an OS called Vista... yeah, they had cash to burn) and nobody else was jumping into the burning building to rescue the Mechwarrior Franchise.

As a hardcore MW fan, from the original PC games, to novels, the tabletop and the Dark Age game.... this franchise is on life support outside of a comic book store... Don't believe me... go to your play store and tell me with all those thousands of mobile developers out there, how many made a MW wannabe... less then 10 from my count...... so how sure are you this game would get a million people tomorrow if a different company did it?

As for trolling, sorry, been here a long time, been white and black knighted and have to say in this instance....

"Whining about free stuff is exactly what is wrong with the world today, so much entitlement and only a bunch of whining when you have to work for something. Respect and appreciation have LEFT the building!"

It's one thing if its server lag (support issue) but the fact that you get out played and come here to whine is sad.... PGI DOES NOT owe you the rewards, they are giving you a chance to EARN SAID REWARDS. So you have a bad streak? Suck it up and move on. Get back in the cockpit and try again. If you don't like it, buy some MC, get your mech bay, get your 7 days premium time and your 6.5 million cbills and skip this weekend. Otherwise, stop being spoiled and grow up.

Mechwarrior Living Legends, a fan-based mod that was out for free and Mechwarrior Tactics, a mobile version of the TT game would like to speak to you about all that nothing happening with the franchise.

The only reason why noone did anything with it in that time is because MS sat it's titanic ass right on the property.

I just hope they don't keep making these challenges solo only, please just stop it. Did the first 25 on Friday but then stopped and never looked back. Shame I wasted the premium time but I suppose the mech bay is something. I just couldn't make it through the slop, 6.5 mill c-bill just wasn't enough.

But this will all fade by the time the next map comes out in month and half or so and will hopefully have the batteries charged back up by then.

This is why I have never been consistent with this game, It gets old after awhile. I'm just starting to play again after four or five months gone. I haven't played since the first round of jumpjet nerfs where implemented. I was already bored of the game and then they completely ruined the ability for heavier mechs to use JJ. The thing that made mechs like the 3D, Victor and Highlander great, now completely gone. Notice you hardly see any of those mechs anymore, there's a reason. completely ruining a certian type of gameplay that has always been in mechwarrior.(end of rant)
