The crazier, more fantastical environments are a little harder to connect with. Not that I mind them...I just like to see familiar settings that are skewed ever so slightly...so that they are subtly surreal, but not too outlandish/ridiculous.

I can agree with that. The best fiction is still grounded in reality. Done right, all art needs is a slight skew to the fantastical to make an impression.
