that and "you shoot me even once, I'll rip open that beer can you call a mech" are two lines that a merc pilot drilled into me as a young mech pilot

But I was just thinking If you had to put your money on a chassis of mech that would be most used by the soon to be top ten pilots of MWO I'm fairly certain they'll be the faster chassis.

That got me thinking about the Commander list of abilities and how they're all going to require you taking your eyes off the battle to set something up. and How many "SURPRISE!" shots from behind are going to be taken on unsuspecting commanders as they try to coordinate strikes.

That then got me thinking about skill in general and that the heavier the mech you go with the more your pilot skill is curbed by the limitations of the slower mech.

That then got me thinking about which mechs will benefit most from what I guess you could call a skilled pilot. Not so much what mechs take more skill to use, more what mechs can have thier effectiveness increased the most with an experienced pilot.

So yeah any thoughts on any of those ramblings ?

To me, a good pilot is one who understands the strengths and more importantly the weaknesses of their mech.

Its got nothing to do with speed as such, as everything has its situation. Learning to find the situations you thrive in and avoiding the ones you fail in are what is key to any confrontation.

There is no use being fast if there is no place to go.

I've always considere it like this:

The heavier/better armed a mech is, the more it benefits from a good gunner, as it can apply it's weaponry well.
The lighter/faster a mech is, the more it benefits from a good pilot, as it can use its speed to full advantage.

Obviously BOTH skills are important for all mech, but that makes sense to me.

If I maneuver you to engage me in an obstacle-dense terrain your velocity is going to become moot and you will fall.

Depends how good a team is. Every team should have players who are designated to watch for members of their team getting into trouble, then go help them. The command will watch for someone in trouble and when they say that player is in trouble, the entire team knows who will be moving to help them. Rather than a confused frenzy of everyone trying to help them.

No different if the commander is getting hit. They call help, two mechs come to the commanders aid quickly. The enemy trying to take a commander from behind gets a surprise because it all happens so fast.

Commander will often have jump and jump everytime they fire LRM. They won't always be in mechs that are easy to target either.

Then they would probably be best suited to the Medium or Heavy class mechs.

I wouldn't say you go slow you die. But its just more the case of you go slower but you put more guns on and/or armor on than a faster mech, but a faster mech can run rings around you and can make more effective use of the terrain and its surroundings. I think medium/heavy is the optimal for a good all around pilot. But im certain that there will be those few gunnery aces in assault mechs that are just alphastriking enemies away on the plains without even trying. Yet put them in a cityscape with a fast moving foe and its certainly a different scenario.

I actually think its quite balanced in that sense. Bigger weapons also (generally) mean slower recycle times too. Sure they hit harder but miss and you can suddenly find yourself in a world of hurt. take gauss rifles for example. Lets say our Atlas decides to shoot a raven with Gauss knowing he can instakill/cripple it. He misses and while he has wasted his time doing that, he has to wait 6 seconds to shoot again and in this time the enemy Atlas has alphastriked our Atlas and crippled him. However used in the right hands they are a huge force to be reckoned with.

So I'm not so sure if we'll see more Heavy/medium mechs or generally faster mechs than heavies. Not when Assault mechs in capable hands are the powerfulest. I think (and hope) there will be a nice balance. Im a Medium/Heavy guy myself...Warhawk is in my heart though
