The main focus of the game is factional warfare between the Five Great Houses and their respective "Successor States." Each house works as a super-guild. You play with other player members of your house in battles with player members of the other houses over control of the various planets in the game world.

Operating on the side are also player created Mercenery Corporations, who can take contracts from the leaders of the houses and temporarily fight on their side. Their contracts go to the highest bidder, however, so it is possible for a Merc Corp to fight on one faction's side on Monday, and then against that faction on Tuesday.
