You mean aside from Shadowhawks and Griffins, which can tank damage better than my Orions? It's like the secret glitch that no one talks about-- a jump-jetting, torso-twisting SH or Griffin can take unbelievable amounts of damage. I've literally had my arms and a leg shot off, along with all my torso armor gone (CT and STs, front and back), and survived 10+ seconds while 6 enemies are hosing me down at point-blank range with lasers, gauss, AC, and SRMs. And I run XL engines. Funny, freakish, and totally broken.
There aren't voids in those hitboxes. However, it says a lot more about balance and the other mediums (they are nowhere near Shadowhawk quality).

no no not a preference - I keep encountering people that absolutely refuse to drive anything but. There's a difference. I *prefer* lights, but I drive everything. I've encountered dudes in drops that absolutely refused to step out of an assault to let someone else run fat for a while. The whole time talking about how great they are (while not delivering) and speaking about "Well *I* am a *dedicated* assault pilot!" - they're usually terrible, and would benefit greatly from some time in a different mech. I understand people like what they like, but it's the flat refusal paired with the total inability to perform that bothers me.

Why should they? If someone wants to drive a specific mech and/or weight class, that's perfectly acceptable. They aren't playing the game for your enjoyment, they're playing it for theirs.
There are two trains of thought here...
1) Letting people play what they want - I don't have a problem with that generally speaking. If I have to grind in a terrible Awesome, I will do so. Then again, I drive Lights, and usually very few people go that route. I don't think there's much respect given to light pilots (or medium pilots for that matter), and that's fine. As long as the opfor dies and I'm still standing (well, specifically our team)... it's a good game.
2) Letting people do their own thing.. to the nth degree - While I don't care too much else on how a group or my teammates approach a match, there are still errors being made.... whether tactical or logical... if you're one to rush into combat and be the first one to die because you haven't waited for your teammates and/or you think you can rambo and/or know better... well, I hope you put up some numbers. Chances are, most players are not that capable, thus fail the team... public embarrassment through their own scores/effort should be enough to change attitudes, but some people keep going at it and ignoring all other people and thoughts. While all that matters is a win, performing in a match is self-evident to everyone. That is how you are to be judged over time.
With that said, I do dislike people not willing to switch out the class they are in, especially if a teammate would like to take that spot in the 3/3/3/3 system. There's something about preference... and then there's being totally selfish in a team game. Every person that says "Lights/Mediums suck" generally are scared or simply unwilling of driving the less survivable classes in the game (there are exceptions to the rule, but I'm talking about people that prefer AssaultWarrior above all else). It's one of the few L2P that needs to be said... because it's more or less true.
