Summoner Vs Timberwolf: Why Do You Choose One Over The Other

The Timberwolf is currently the best mech in Mechwarrior online for MANY REASONS:
1. Damage transfer and hitboxes - In Mechwarrior Online, when you deal damage to a component, it takes full damage (simple concept, I'm sure), but what some people don't know is that if you deal damage to a destroyed component (such as a destroyed torso or a destroyed leg) the damage that is transferred to the next component is HALVED. This is the reason that the Centurion (back in the days before host state rewind) was nearly indestructible after it was down to its center torso. The Timberwolf shares many characteristics of the Stalker, effectively having ill-defined side torsos (due to its dome shape), making it difficult to always place shots on the center torso. After losing a torso, the Timberwolf can easily use that hard-to-miss side torso to reduce damage taken by 50% thanks to its hit boxes.
2. Speed, pure and simple - All Timberwolves move at a speed of 89.1 kph (after speed tweak) (yes, I know that Summoners move at the same speed, but this is just an explanation of why the T-wolf is so good) which allows the T-wolf to keep up with and run down nearly every mech in the entire game.
3. Jack-of-all-trades master of... all?! - The Timberwolf can poptart, boat LRMs, brawl, and everything inbetween. No other mech in the game has the versatility to perform every role that's been defined in MWO like the Timberwolf can. When you turn a corner and see a Timberwolf, they could rush you, burst pinpoint you, or start slinging LRMs or even all 3, you just don't know.

Buy the summoner, eww. I wanted to love it, but the loss of 5 tons, forced 5 JJ's, and lack of Endosteel coupled with extremely limited hardpoints just serve to make it a very lackluster mech. Blech.

That's about 10 tons more than the Summoner.

At the cost of less durability. CTF STs are pretty easy to hit targets.

and, the point, the Summoner still has better agility.

odd. I have both.
Twof is like a Mustang. Everyone has one. And anyone can do well with them. Thus, they are boring. It doesn't take skill to do well in a TWolf. Embrace a challenge once in awhile, instead of a Meta.
You might actually surprise yourself and have fun.

This is not to say you can't have fun in the Summoner, just like I have fun running my Dragon's. Understand though that there is absolutely nothing that the Summoner can do that the Timberwolf can't do better.
My Summoner still has more games in it because I wub it, but its got about half my timby's KDR and W/L. I used to be able to do good things when Clan PPC's were still good, but those low mounted arms are a problem for lasers.
EDIT: I did find the Summoner to actually be a very good dueling mech though. When you only need 1 or 2 tons of ammo and you don't have to worry about multiple angles it can actually do quite well.

I'm not telling you to stop playing the SMN.
I'm not telling you that is awful.
You don't need to be defensive bud, I'm looking at this objectively, I own both of them - I want both of them to be good mechs.
Their agility is a lot closer than you think, for me an extra 10 tons of stuff is worth a few % off the top - maybe for you its not:
As you can see they are very, very close (and that gap is mostly raw engine size difference).
So I don't think it's "far" (your words) away from the Cataphract.
I'm more interested in the objectivity of it, not what is "good" or "bad".
There's too much hyperbole tossed around on these forums as it is.

I have both too.. I mastered my Summoner as well.
But the fact remains, it is woefully inferior to the MadCat.

So, the Summoner is an Audi A4 for people who can't afford a BMW 3-series?
This thread exists as a repository for why the [REDACTED] is [REDACTED], as a way of gathering mass opinions on the specifics of what makes what better than what. It's not a trap, just a venting ground for the sake of data collection.

Cool. THAT may be valid.
The arrogant d-bag assertion I responded to, was not.

The Suckoner's one semi-advantage is that its more narrow torso profile can be more easily shielded from the side. This means that your arms can be used as shields with a Thor, whereas Mad Cat arms rarely absorb much damage (it goes mostly to the torsos). Otherwise, though, it feels like piloting a morbidly obese medium mech trapped in a heavy's body.
So what you're saying is, the Summoner is the Clan Dragon?

The enemy was simply awed at the sight of the Summoner, shocked that it wasn't a Timber Wolf. Shocked into inaction.

The Summoner just... feels like it was made IS style - which is to say intentionally gimped in design to make it inferior.

Nah my team got rolled. It ended up being a 4 on 1 in the end and I survived.
