I believe those are Clans but not one of the 4 listed and recognized clans at the moment.

Or is it supposed to be for "clanners" that defected to the IS/Comstar (a la Nova Cat) for IS players using clan mechs?

Or...for Clanners that can't be considered Mercs for the sake of CW...

Your guess is as good as mine really as this was introduced just yesterday without a peep.

Hopefully someone well versed in BT lore could give some ideas. Off the top of my head I thought of them as like mercenaries for the clans. Then I asked myself how likely the clans would be to actually use mercs in the first place. Or maybe loyalists are people in the Inner Sphere who support the clans causes?

Any more guesses or ideas?

It's a generic clan tag for those other, non-invasion clans or made up clans like Clan Butter Face and Clan Rusty Codpiece.

No idea what that represents. I know my BattleTech history, and there's nothing like that in the universe. That symbol is just using a Cameron star as a symbol of the Star League.

It's for the "lonewolf" version of a Clanner...basically, players that want to fight for the Clans but do not want to side with any one Clan in particular.

Why doesn't someone just bumble over to Twitter or Reddit and just ask?

It's not like they actually use their official forums anyway.

There are what, 17 Clans at this point in time? ( there were 20 originally, Wolverine, Widowmaker and Mongoose are gone... don't think I forgot any)

So, that star icon is basically "I'm Clan but not from Clan Wolf, Clan Jade Falcon, Clan Ghost Bear or Clan Smoke Jaguar."

Bondsman, member of one of the non-Big 4 invading Clans, the Red Corsair, take your pick.

The Cameron Star represents any NON-INVADING Clan or anyone who is a Clan Loyalist.

Those would be....

Clan Cloud Cobra
Clan Star Adder
Clan Goliath Scoprion
Clan Fire Mandrill
Clan Snow Raven
the list goes on......

It is a generic flag for those who are part of the non-invading Clans.

Each Clansman is, basically, a Loyalist, except Dark Caste and such. :)

Here is some back story on the star found at sarna

The Cameron Star - The Insignia of the Star League
The insignia of the Star League and its defense force, a star with two of its rays longer than the others, would emerge from humble beginning in the moths prior to the formal declaration of the new realm. Dismissing a number of options either for similarity to the star-burst of the Federated Suns or their lack of acknowledgement of the Periphery realms, Ian Cameron's visit to his young niece Tomasina Cameron-Havley and her flawed attempt at drawing a symmetrical star would provide the First Lord with a strong concept that appealed to both him and other other Council lords, with Star League Directive 1 formally recognizing it as the official emblem of the Star League on 10 July 2571.[1] [2]
The Cameron Star would adorn a number of military and civil awards. Despite including no Cameron lineage, the revived Second Star League would retain the Cameron Star as its insignia and the daggerstar emblem of the SLDF's decendents, the Clans, also shares a large commonality with the Cameron Star.

Clans Blood Spirit and Coyote use this modified star in there logos. so with this logo tied to the clans PGI decided to use it for players that want to be clan but not part of the four 1st wave invading clans

For the record, the generic Clan emblem is not the Cameron Star, but the Clan "Daggerstar".

THIS is the Cameron Star, the emblem of the Star League:

THIS is the emblem of the Clans:

The Cameron Star features two "long" arms (one substantially longer than the other, and the other substantially longer than the two "short" arms) set 90 degrees apart, with a hollow pattern at the intersection.
The Clan Emblem, the "Daggerstar", is much more typically-cruciform, with three "short" arms of equal length and one much longer arm directed downward, with a solid intersection.
