Can't speak on the 'pract because I'm not that big a fan of the chassis to begin with but as far as the Ravens go, I thought the only reason people played the other variants was so they could master the 3L

It's not about utility, it's about flavor. The Raven 3L is a CapCon mech, while the 1X is a FedSuns design. The Cataphract 1X is the original (CapCon) prototype, while the 4X is a FedSuns prototype.

It is not really that difficult.

K = Kurita (Draconis Combine)
M = Marik (Free Worlds League)
L = Liao (Capellan Confederation)
S = Steiner (Lyran Commonwealth/Federated Commonwealth)
D = Davion (Federated Suns/Federated Commonwealth)

Most variants with letters other than that (or no letters), are Star League, and therefore mostly scattered about the Houses.

yeah, this is really weird, the -4X is the Davion -X Cataphract, yet it's not on sale? And why is the Trebuchet -7K on sale, when it was a Draconis Combine testbed for direct fire support?

There were some oddballs in the last series but these kinda stick out beyond the norm. I mean, it's not like Kurita and Davion are exactly buddy-buddy right now.

It is so close to the Liao sale it isn't funny. I was hoping for the other firestarters to go on sale, but nope, same lot. I was hoping for cataphract 4x too, but I might just grab the 1X so I can elite my 3D.

I'm also not buying an Awesome until they do the dynamic hardpoints... but that might be the crippling blow to the Awesome-8R...

Cuz it's awesome, obviously. And the FWL will sell it to just about anyone. In case you're wondering, there is a factory that produces Awesomes in the Federated Suns, but they probably don't produce the 9M.
