NGNG and/or comstarNA are probably the best place's to get your first groups and advice from vets. The forums allow alot of theory and knowledge but practical is what you need more. Most people on these servers are friendly and willing to help new players and you will learn much more in these places than solo.

I tend to live in comstarNA and if you ever see me in there please feel free to jump in say hi and pick my brain.

I joined the TS server last night and hung around in the newbie channel for about an hour, unfortunately nobody joined me I didn't want to jump down into the other channels as wasn't sure if I could. Still, with my FPS issue probably not worth it. Are there any maps online with the typical meeting points of the two teams?

I'm thinking I can at least make use of my time by learning the maps and controls and knowing the points where the two forces meet would be helpful.

You can try moving to team/group rooms to see who wants to help a noobie. The NGNG TS server has dropships specifically for ad-hoc groups -- start there.

Twitch streamers/users will also usually help out, often even dropping with viewers.

Smurfy has map movements and other data mapped here. The heatmap overlay shows where the typical party happens on different modes.
