Well the time has come. I'm not a new player, but the monotony and chaos of the PUG queue is finally getting to me, and I'm looking to join a unit, cuz CW is a-comin.

Now seeing as I've never been in a unit in MWO (or any game really) before, I'm really not sure how it works or anything, but here's a bit about me:
  • Casual Player - EST (GMT - 4:00 I think, never understood how that worked, some say - 5:00) Been playing MWO for about 1.5 yrs.
  • I don't think I'm 'bad' by any means. I usually do well in the PUG queue (500 DMG+ if we're actually playing as a team), although I recognize that the group queue is an entirely different animal. I also recognize the importance of team play, and communication.
  • I do not have a microphone at the moment.
  • I work 9-6 every day [again, EST / NY], and only play after work, can't make time commitments. Just want to drop with people when I'm on.
  • I mainly pilot Jagers, Blackjacks, Catapults, and Novas (so mostly fire support). Looking to branch out [recently got the CTF-IM and loving it], but the CBill grind is nuts.
  • I really just want to play with some cool dudes who enjoy winning, and also having fun. (Sometimes those two don't go hand in hand)
Which brings me to another topic: I'm not really sure which faction I like. I'm not terribly deep into lore, although I understand the storyline. Steiner, Marik, maybe Davion, and CJF have always intrigued me. No interest in FRR, Liao, Kurita, or other Clans.

The mechs I usually pilot are listed above if that has an affect on which faction I should pick, but honestly I'm not too deeply immersed (yet), and don't care too much. I'd prefer whichever faction has decently thought out battle plans, isn't overly cocky, but still kicks ass when necessary. Not really about that WARRIOR-TO-THA-CORE mentality. At the end of the day, I get out of my mech, and go home to my house to be lazy, you know what I mean?

Thanks for the help sirs & ladies.

You can also go here and check out different units yourself: FACTIONS - MERC CORPS

That's how I found my unit. Good luck ;-)

Plenty of posters also have their unit in their sig. I know most of the friendly posters are often willing to recruit.

You can also try units out on the public servers. The Steiner Hub is pretty friendly in my experience.

Also not every unit requires that you have a mic. I would suggest joining one. It is a lot of fun to play with people that you have met.

Don't have a microphone?

Sorry buddy, consider trying out a new game like Call of Duty or just pugging until you get a mic, because trying to get on a team (let alone a good one) without a mic, is actually insulting to the team.

That's like coming into an interview for with shorts and sandals.

Xero,

What other folks have posted is *mostly* accurate so to add:

Most units operate some sort of comms, most often TS3 (http://www.teamspeak...page=teamspeak3). You don't have to have a mic to start but you will likely need to still install so that you can listen. You will also likely want to get a mic to join in on the fun and the communication.

Some units are big and some are small. A bigger unit will often have more competitive and PUG players online at any time to team up with and learn from. Some of the smaller units can create a closer community and some of them are very selective.

I see that your are currently Steiner affiliated, so if you want to look for Steiner units that are recruiting you can go here: http://mwomercs.com/...n-commonwealth/

Best of luck in whichever unit you chose.

Well thankfully this is a game, and not something that actually matters in life like a job interview. (See, you be snarky to me, and I'll give it right back! :) )

Let me add some information to this to clarify why I don't have a microphone: the computer I use for casual gaming is located within a home recording studio. I have microphones yes, all of which are used and/or set up for recording, not gaming/desktop use. Routing all of these signal paths so one of my current microphones works with MWO isn't all that viable at the moment, so until I make enough disposable income to buy a headset/microphone combo, I have no mic. Do I eventually plan to get a headset for gaming? Yes. Can I, or have I been able to thusfar? No. I hope that some groups/units will understand that, and judging by how courteous the MWO community seems to be in comparison to other games, I think some will.

If me not having the money to buy a gaming headset for the one PC game I actively play is 'insulting' to some teams, then those really aren't the teams I want to be on, and they should take the stick(s) out of their ass.

Sorry for being crass, maybe I just need a beer.

In other news, there's a lance challenge. And sadly when the rest of Zhizhu normally gets on, I'll be in bed 'cause tomorrow I got a 6 AM shift to noon followed by a 10 PM shift to 5 AM.

So those of you who are on and could either use some help or would like to help me out, that'd be great. A lance must be 4 people.

Hey mike is no problem on the short term for alot of groups but long term it will really help your fun factor to have one as the good natured ribbing and teasing is something to have. I personally picked up a cheap mike/headphone set at Office max for like $15 and it works as well as anything else. I use it when I'm on a business trip and have to use my laptop. So consider that when you have that short term cash.

Well sir I'm glad you created this thread. I'd like to throw the Grog Corps in to the hat. The Grog Corps is a small group of casual gamer's that play for fun with out a competitive atmosphere. Sure we like to win but if we lose, well, the launch button will always be there to try again. We are a recently formed merc unit recruiting pilots in preparation for CW. Currently, we are comprised of eight members ranging from new-ish pilots, to seasoned veterans with a few prospects. We have no requirements to join other than you be of legal drinking age because of our association with alcohol :). If you want to check us out I'll leave a link to our recruitment page here. Hope to hear from you, and see you on the battlefield!
