I can see the desire to filter chat for inappropriate content.

... but this is a team game ... I have no idea how a team can function if people have the option of simply not listening at all. If folks turn off team chat then they can't see any information that may be shared by team mates regarding the other team's actions ... they won't see reminders or suggestions to group up ... team mates saying what the remaining enemy mechs are or where they can be found ... any coordination like "push" or "fall back".

Turning off All chat should be a choice ... but allowing the option to turn off team or lance chat as well doesn't make any sense to me.

Is there actually any other team game out there that gives you the option to turn off listening to your team?

Ahahaha NO. Just providing an overly used example I've seen, and we can all relate to. It's actually one of the main reasons I left my former unit. Props for finding a picture with "lock" in it tho. :D

People need thicker skin...

Guys, you have done it!

We have been asking for quite a while to have the ability to disable chat and, lo and behold, here it is in this patch!

I believe this will go a long way towards calming things down in matches and making games more enjoyable. I, and the Seraphim, salute you and thank you for doing this as it will cut down on trolling in matches, make the games more enjoyable for players, and make it easier for parents to introduce their children to this game without wondering what will come across the chat next.

To everyone involved, from the decision makers to the programmers: "Thank you, thank you, thank you..."

Alex...

Stupidest thing ever.

Yeah lets disable chat so that when your teammate is yelling, "Enemy is flanking around the right, we are getting surrounded." over and over, no one will be listening and your team gets rolled.

Also why scout? I mean you run into a group of enemies using ECM so you try to tell your team where they are yet again because half or more of your team has disable chat, no one has a clue.

Honestly, this sort of crap frustrates me more than someone screaming, "L2P!!!" simply because I am secure in my skill (or lack there of).

Thank god for the "shut up pugs" toggle. Now I can keep my blood pressure blissfully low by just turning off all chat and only having to communicate with the people I want to, the people in my ts channel.

Thanks PGI.

The helpful information text is outweighed by garbage by a factor of 10-20 in this game. And out of that, I would not be surprised if the vast majority is ignored for various reasons making the functionality close to nil. I've had maybe a handful or two of games out of thousands where I saw an effective battle plan or assistance be given by people I wasn't already in TS with. They are freakishly rare events that do not justify the need to force it on people who do not want what it's most commonly used for: cursing at and trolling people.

Again, well done PGI for giving the community a much needed self controlled moderation feature.

And for those of you cussing mad that you can be muted, look at it this way, those of us who are just sick of you now won't know to report you and get you banned. Take the little perks where you get them. You can cuss like a 12 year old who just learned a new naughty word to make grandma faint, and the rest of the adult can't hear you anymore.

OH MY GOD! Someone spent time working on this? Oh this is the answer to all are problems. One of the only "calm" things in the match was when players would say Good luck or Good game. This is how you start to win back the community PGI?

And more often they cry/flame like no tomorrow after losing a match.

I just learned of a reason to turn chat back on. When I'm the last man standing and I've got team traitors. So there's a good legitimate reason to do that after you're the only guy left. Get the traitors banned.

Wow OK now I see were this is all coming from. By all means enjoy not listening to you team any longer. Not that your team ever did (just my personal experience with your team). The better news is I no longer have to hear your team members.

Honestly ... I would have much preferred a block/ignore feature so you could filter out the idiots and on those games when someone says something useful you will actually see it.

In my personal experience, even the small amount of organization that can be manged using team chat can be sufficient to affect the outcome of a match. Letting folks block team chat rather than those players who abuse it means that organizing a team just became that much harder.

Yay I can still troll my team!

Only the teammates that didn't disable the team channel. ;)

Just remember: You can exactly specify what chat channels you want to see, so any combination of "lance", "team" and "all" channels are possible.

I've been asking for a chat FILTER, NOT a toggle to completely remove it.
80% of all chat is funny, important or just...funny.....a toggle wasn't what I've wanted

Hmm, I don't really like filters. Whenever I encounter them they're either too strict or too lax. And they're very easy to trick.

Of course, if you mean filtering out specific individuals (and not language filters), then yes, that would be great.

This really should default to on. Who expects to play an online game with no chat? Defaulting it to off just means more people will ask support how to turn it on, or try and fail to ask how to turn it on ingame.

I really don't understand why anyone would ever turn of chat in an online game in the first place, though. You probably shouldn't be online if you are bothered by words. That said I guess the option to turn it off doesn't hurt, just like an option to turn off the HUD entirely wouldn't hurt. It just isn't very useful.

aaaaaaaaaaaaand the answer is voice chat :) unless you have no MWO friends or are wanting to just PUG it out, there's no reason to not use a TeamSpeak server, be it public or private.

Luckily for me, being in the Seraphim means you have 24 hour access to a private TeamSpeak server, where there is often a large group of people in TeamSpeak with room for one more and where no-one should have to worry about bad language :)
