Simple question I hope. Can I put together a system and only use a SSD with no HDD? Planning on a gaming system that does not require tons and tons of gigs.

Yes, I personally run a laptop with just a 128 gig SSD for work and my desktop has a 128 gig SSD with all system files on it and a 500 gig HHD for storage.

Only an SSD is fine.
But even if the System is only for gaming, I'd look for at least a 256 GB drive. Games are getting bigger and bigger and if you install more then a handfull of games, you are soon running out of space if you use a smaller drive. You do not want to load your SSD until there is no free bit left.

I second Egomane. I had a 120GB OCZ Vertex, and before it died, I had managed to fill it almost instantly. I upgraded to a 250GB Samsung 840EVO, and having the same rough number of games, it left me a lot more breathing room (I keep maybe 8-10 games around and played enough to justify continued installation at any time)
Speaking of which, if you want an SSD, make sure it's a Samsung 840EVO. There's essentially no other drive worth purchasing as a consumer. They're faster than other drives, and cheaper, and don't have Deathstar, erm, I mean Sandforce controllers in them

It's all about how deep your pockets are. SSD's are much more expensive. If you're only going to have an SSD, personally, I'd go for a 512gb drive. They have been coming down in price.

I agree with Egomane and Catamount...getting a larger SSD is a good call. As noted above the Samsung EVO 840 drives are nice, and the sales have started on them now that the 850 Pro and 850 models are out.

only an SSD is fine these days, I added a 128 GB drive to my system at the start of the year, and it totaly revitalised the 3 year old PC but with just programs installed I have almost filled it, so I agree with Egomane, you will want at least a 200GB drive, but if you want more than 500GB I would advise adding a HDD for overflow and backup purposes as SSDs bigger than 500GB start to get really expensive for a relatively small size increase
while it would not hurt to have an internal HDD for backup purposes, you only really need a HDD as a secondary drive if you need more than about 250GB of storage,
e.g.
you are a keen photographer
you edit videos (work on the SSD then save the output to the HDD)
you want to keep a huge collection of games installed

Get the biggest SSD you can afford. You can always add an HDD or a second SSD later.

I have a Samsung Evo 840 250gb as my system drive, and it's great to see windows pop up in like 4 seconds. My 750gb WD Black drive keeps all the game stuff because I swear to god if anything's going to corrupt the SSD it's going to be me watching porn windows.

I have only used up 175 gig on my old system and its general purpose familly use. I have a 250gig evo on my newegg wishlist now that i see it is a good choice. Thanks everyone!
